Pima County, the second largest of the four original Arizona counties, was created by the 1st Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1864 with land acquired through the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico in 1853. Pima County lost its northwestern portion to the creation of Maricopa County in 1873. A northern portion was lost in 1875 and 1877 to the formation and expansion of Pinal County. The eastern section of Pima County was taken when Graham and Cochise Counties were formed in 1881. And finally, in 1899, a small piece became Santa Cruz County.
Tucson is the County Seat.
