COUNTY FORMATION

Mohave County was created by Arizona's first Territorial Assembly in 1864. It was one of the four original counties (Pima, Yuma, and Yavapai being the others). In 1865, Pah-Ute County was created from it, and was merged back into Mohave County, when much of its territory was ceded to Nevada. The boundaries of Mohave County have not changed since 1881.

Mohave County has had five county seats: Mohave City (1864–1867), Hardyville (1867–1873), Cerbat (1873–1877), Mineral Park (1877–1887), and Kingman (1887–present).

Mohave County is also notable for being home to a large polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sect located in Colorado City.

It has many neighboring counties. Coconino and Yavapai Counties are east of Mohave County. La Paz County is south. The State of Nevada is to the northwest; Lincoln County, to the northwest, and Clark County to the west. The State of Utah is to the northeast; Washington County, is north. Kane County, Utah, is northeast. The State of California, San Bernardino County, is southwest of Mohave County.
