FACTUAL HISTORY
Company "I", 158th Infantry, first organized in Flagstaff, Arizona on June 6, 1891, by order of the Territorial Legislature, was designated Company "I," First Arizona Infantry, under the command of a United States Military Academy graduate, Captin Kislinberry. The unit drilled in Powell Hall, which stood on the ground now occupied by the Flagstaff Steam Laundry.
Although existing records do not show it, Flagstaff old-timers say another Company was organized in 1892 by George Hoherderffer. It is not known whether this unit, designated Company "I" was formed from the remnants of the other outfit or was in addition to it.
First quartered in a small house which still stand on the southwest corner of Santa Fe Avenue and Kendrick Street, this unit acquired quarters on the second floor of Babbitt Hall, the building now occupied by Babbit Bros. Trading Company store. When the G. A. R. Hall was constructed in 1900, the unit moved there.
On April 16, 1916, the unit was designated a Machine Gun Company. The records at this point are not plain, but Company "I" 158th Infantry, served with the Regiment in France under the command of Captain E. M. Robinson.
In Phoenix on May 26, 1920, Battery "A" First Arizona Field Artillery, was organized. On October 12, 1921, the designation was changed to Battery "D" 158th Field Artillery, and on June 1, 1924 it was redesignated Howitzer Company, 158th Infantry, which unit remained in Flagstaff until September 1, 1926, when it was again redesignated Company "I" 158th Infantry, bringing the old orginal outfit back home.
The present new, modern Armory, completed by the State in 1936, is a far cry from the old Powell Hall, but the present state of training and efficiency is actuated by the same desire that caused the formation of that first unit - preparedness!
