SMAIL, Horace T.
29 July 1912 - 21 December 1982 Globe - Horace T. Smail, 70, who was a refrigerator repairman for the City of Phoenix, died Dec. 21, 1982, at John C. Lincoln Hospital. Mr. Smail, of Payson Star Route in the Globe area, was born in Missouri, and moved to Arizona 12 years ago from Michigan. He was a Mason. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughter, Sharyn Carlos; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Henderson Funeral Home in Mesa arranged the private services. 12/25/1982.

SMALLEY, Alicia Laura
Alicia Laura Smalley was born on February 19, 1952 in Las Vegas, Nevada to her parents Jim and Rae SMALLEY. Alicia grew up in Henderson where she graduated from Basic High School in 1970. Alicia earned her BS in Social Work from Arizona State University in 1974. Upon graduation she moved to Carson City and began working for the State of Nevada. She worked for the State of Nevada for over twenty years working in the Employment Security Division, the Welfare Division, SIIS, Vocational Rehabilitation, the Division of Aging Services, and the Sierra Regional Center. In 1995 Alicia earned her MS in Social Work at University of Nevada Reno. Upon completion of an intern ship in Washington, DC, she began working at the University of Nevada Reno as the Educational Equity Coordinator in the College of Education. She eventually earned her position as Field Work Coordinator in the Social Work Department. In addition to her commitments at UNR, she taught social work courses at TMCC. She also traveled statewide teaching ethics to social workers donating her earnings to the Nevada chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Alicia was elected to the Douglas County School Board and served 10 years in this position. She was active with the Women for Political Action and served on the National Women's Political Caucus. She was on the National Board for the National Association of Social Workers and traveled to Washington, D.C., six times a year to meet with the board. She served on their National School of Social Work Credential Committee, was chair of the National Political Action Committee, and chair of the legislative committee of the NASW of Nevada. She served as President of NASW of Nevada and earned their Nevada Social Worker of the Year Award in 1993. She was also the recipient of the Social Work Congressional Fellows award. In 1995 the National Association of School Boards awarded her their "A Worker for Children" award. Alicia Laura Smalley, 54, died December 16, 2006 in Carson City. She was a 32-year resident of Carson Valley. She is survived by her mother Rae, brother Ed, and sister Esther COTHRUN. She is also survived by her three children: Brook Adie, Darin Arigoni and Drew Arigoni, two grandchildren: Sierra and Sage Adie, and her life partner, Stephen Nicholas. Services were held at The First Presbyterian Church, 306 West Musser Street, Carson City.

SMALLRIDGE, Maxine C.
22 Jul 1924 - 11 Oct 1980 Maxine Smalldridge, 56, a member of the Arizona Dental Association Auxiliary, came here in 1958 from Perry, Iowa, and died Oct. 11, 1980. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Robert E.; daughters, Sally Smallridge and Nancy Sommer. Services were in Shadow Rock Congregational Church. 10/15/1980.

Irvin C. "Ike" Smart, 83, of Sun Lakes, died June 5, 1994. He was born in Minnesota and was a retired sales representative. SMART, James E., Jr.
James F. Smart, Jr., 68, died Friday, May 5, 1967, in the VA hospital at Prescott. He came to Arizona in 1948 after working 25 years as an electrician for General Motors Corp in Dayton, OH. He served as a chief electrician in the Navy during both world wars and was a member of the EUB church here and the Masonic Lodge in Bremerton, WA. Survivors include his wife, Violet P.; two stepsons, the Rev. Carlton Gamble of Cincinnati and Army Lt. Russell E. Chapman in Vietnam; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jack Brooks of Dayton; five sisters and three brothers out of state and eight grandchildren. Burial at Ft. Whipple Cemetery in Prescott. May 7, 1967.

Mr. Smith, a 41-year resident of the Williams and Flagstaff area, died Saturday, August 26, 1967, in the VA Hospital. He had been a patient six months. A world War I Army veteran, he came to Arizona from Texas. He was born in Farmington, Missouri. Survivors include his wife, Cleda, of Williams; a son, Bill of Flagstaff; two daughters, Mrs. N. E. Bernard J. Smith, Jr., 55, of 1735 W. Mission Lane, died Saturday, May 6, 1967, at the Veterans Administration Hospital here. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Smith came to Phoenix four years ago from Broomall, Pennsylvania. He was a retired photoengraver who serve 19 years with the Curtis Publishing Co. He was a veteran of World War II. He belonged to Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Helen; five sons, Donald, Daniel, and Ronald, all of Phoenix; Robert in California; and William of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Mrs. Elaine A. SMITH, Beulah Frances
Beulah Frances Smith, 88, died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at her home in Prescott. She was born April 17, 1916 in Maricopa county near Phoenix, Arizona, the daughter of Sam and Josephine (Logan) Patterson. Beulah met and later married the love of her life, Ernest A. Smith on June 30, 1940. She graduated college and became a librarian and Elementary School Teacher. She move to Prescott in 1986 and worked for the First Baptist Church in the library. Beulah was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her son John A. Smith of Glendale, AZ and a daughter Marilyn F. Fuller of Prescott. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Prescott. Beulah enjoyed caring for her family, cooking and sewing. Beulah loved being a librarian and the time she spent with her church family. Above all she was proud of her own family. A Celebration of Beulah's life will be held Friday, September 24, 2004 at 10:00 am, at Solid Rock of the First Baptist Church on Marina St. in Prescott with Pastor Flood officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona. Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements for their mother. SMITH, Catherine E.
Catherine E. "Kay" Ferris Smith, 90, passed away September 11, 2004, in Higley, Arizona, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Nephi L. Smith in 1982. She was a long time resident of Safford, Arizona and worked as a nurse there for many years. She moved to Higley to live with her daughter eight months ago because of her illness. She was born in Illinois but came to love Arizona and especially her home in Safford and her farm in Central, Arizona. She is survived by her son, Raymond (Glenda) Smith, daughter, Kay Jean (Conrad) Allen, brother, Harry (Janet) Ferris, sister, Nellie Aberdeen, 14 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, 36 great, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 in Safford at the 20th Street Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 389 W. 20th St., 10:00 am. There will be a viewing, Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Bunker's Caldwell Chapel Mortuary, 112 E. Main St. in Safford and an hour prior to the services at the church. SMITH, Cathy
Cathy Smith died November 21, 2005. Cathy was born March 20, 1948, in Long Beach, New York. She received her BA from Boston University and her MSW from Arizona State University and was a physical education teacher in the Isaacs School District in West Phoenix for a number of years prior to her becoming a remarkable psychotherapist. She founded the inpatient codependency program at West Valley Camelback Hospital and later established a private practice in Phoenix. In addition to her career, Cathy was also an accomplished writer, and her stories and essays were published in Sun, Cure, Hope, and the Women's Seder Source Book 2003. She was also a storyteller to children in book stores, and she wrote stories for her own grandchildren with whom she had much happiness. Cathy is survived by her husband Dr, Neil Sapin, her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Stan Betters, her stepdaughters Jennifer and Lindsay Sapin, her grandchildren Adam and Violet Betters and Maya Sapin. Her son Brian predeceased her. She is also survived by her mother Helen Zisser-Sher, her brother Michael Tash and his wife Beth and daughter Rachael, her father Irving Tash, her stepfather Manny Zisser and her stepbrothers Michael, Peter, Paul, and Steven Zisser. In addition, she is survived by aunts and uncles Sandy and Roz Count, Babs and Derek Davis, cousins Laurie Gilburne, Caroline Count, Andrew Giiburne, and Gary Count. Dr. Susan Maxwell said it best when she wrote, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being an inspiration, a beacon of authenticity, and a spiritual light. All these you will never cease to be." 10 April 1897 - 13 Mar 1980 Cletis W. Smith, 82, came here from Wabash, Indiana, and died March 13, 1980, in Phoenix Veterans Hospital. Mr. Smith started the Land O'Sun Printers at Scottsdale in 1948 and retired in 1968. He was a World War I veteran and a member of Berean Bible Fellowship. He was the owner of Smith & Wilson Printers in Wabash, IN, from 1932 to 1947. Survivors include his wife, Estelle; daughters, Doreen Coco and Ruth Banker; four grandchildren. Cave Creek - Dorothy E. Smith, 86, a nationally known librarian and author and founder of the Cave Creek branch of the Maricopa County Library named in her honor, died Saturday, June 15, 1974, in thehome of a friend, Edith Rawlings. Miss Smith completed her library training at Mather College of Western Reserve University in her native Cleveland and earned a master's degree at Columbia University in New York. Survivors include nephews, George R. and William J. Thomas, and niece, Martha R. Thomas. Memorial services were held Valentine Day, Feb. 14, 1975, in the Dorothy E. Smith Library in Cave Creek. Sun City - Erva T. Smith, 79, a former bank secretary, died Dec. 29, 1982. She was a native of Willmett, Illinois, and moved to Sun City in 1972. She was a member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church and a 10-year volunteer at Boswell Memorial Hospital until November 1982. SMOOT, Richard Carl
Richard Carl Smoot, born in Oakland, CA December 11, 1926, succumbed to cancer on August 31, 2004 under the loving care of Hospice of the Valley. He was surrounded by family members and now is on the big golf course in the sky. Rich served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in post-war Japan. He was discharged in San Francisco where he spent his working days as a parts-man for various automotive dealerships. He retired to Phoenix in 1990 where he enjoyed playing golf at least three times a week and rooting for his favorite football team, the Arizona Rattlers.
