PHALEN, Robert J.
Mesa - Robert J. Phalen, 64, former owner of Bob's Cleaners and Laundry Services, died Dec. 25, 1982, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital. Mr. Phalen, 2145 N. Country Club, was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and moved to Arizona in 1952. He was a dog kennel owner and founding member of Superstition Kennel Club. He was a member of the Maricopa Southside Sheriff's Posse and Mesa Elks, and was a board member of Arizona Quarter Horse Breeders Association. He is surved by wife, May; daughters, Kathleen, Linda Health and Debra Cooper; son, Robert; brother, Father John, Bridgeport; and nine grandchildren. Services were at Melcher's Chapel of the Roses. 12/28/1982.

PHAM, Canh Thi
Canh Thi Pham, 89, of Tempe, died May 18, 1994. She was born in Vietnam and was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughters, Thu Kim and Lien Kim Nguyen; son, Thang Ngoc Nguyen; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild. 21 May 1994.

Tolleson - Lillie A. Phares, 79, died Fri., March 6, 1970. She was born in Illinois and came to Phoenix in 1943 from Oklahoma. Two sons, Dewey PHARES of Tolleson and Earl PHARES of Coachella, CA; daughters, Leona EUBANK of Allen, OK and Iona McBEE of Phoenix; three brothers out of state; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. PHELPS, Dr. Rose
Dr. Rose Phelps, 80, who taught library science at the University of Illinois from 1931 to 1958, died Saturday, in her home at Orangewood American Baptist Estates, 7550 N. 16th St. She attended the University of Michigan and Columbia University and received her doctorate in library science in 1943 from the University of Chicago. She came to Arizona 10 years ago from Illinois. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. R. A. Culver, and a brother out of state. Services in the Church of the Beatitudes. Private cremation. PHILLIPS, Dorothy Ann
Dorothy (Dottie) Ann Phillips, 73 years, Payson, Arizona passed away September 4, 2004 in Payson, Arizona. She was born on March 3, 1931 in Iron Mountain, Michigan and in 1931 moved to Arizona with her parents, William and Eleanor Abbott and 7 brothers and sisters. The family homesteaded in the Sunnyslope area of Phoenix. Dorothy attended Creighton Elementary School and Phoenix Union High School. She was a loving mother, grandparent and friend and will be missed by family and friends alike. Survivors: Husband of 26 years George Phillips. They resided in Soldatna, Alaska until their move to Payson in 1992. Her brothers Roger Abbott and wife Shirley, Thomas Abbott and wife Virginia, three children Carl Ellis and wife Val of Aumsville, Oregon, Victoria Randall and husband George of Payson, Jenny Winton and husband Danny of Redding, CA. 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. San Carlos - Fred Phillips, 72, a retired cattleman, died Dec. 27, 1982, in San Carlos Hospital. Mr. Phillips was a lifelong resident of San Carlos and served in the Army in World War II. Travis served our country from 1970 Ð 1972 in the Army, honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Travis served in Vietnam, earning several honors including Bronze Stars, and commendations for valor. Travis' profession was the telecommunications industry, where he worked as lineman in his early career, and later moved into operational and project management; employed by Honeywell/AlliedSignal and Norstan Communications over the past 20 years in Arizona. Travis is survived by his wife, Jayne (Adamson) Phillips, of Chandler, AZ; and many beautiful children: Travis Sehestedt, (33) of Lehi, UT; Shawna Olson (32) of Chesapeake, VA; David Blum (30) and Whitney Valdez (15) of Paducah, KY; Travis W. Phillips 24, and Tara Phillips 22, of Chandler, AZ; along with spouses and 6 grandchildren. Travis' father preceded him in death; and he is survived by his mother and father Mary and William Cabbage of Spokane; 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Robert S. Pickerill, 47, of 14610 N. 28th Way, a territorial sales manager for Johnson Wax, died Feb. 5, 1982, in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr. Pickerill was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and came to Phoenix in 1963. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, the Masons, the Scottish Rite and the Shriners. PIERCE, Alfred Steven
Alfred Steven Pierce peacefully passed on to be with the Lord on September 2, 2004. He was 87 years of age and was born in Dayton, Missouri. He has had a wonderful and happy marriage, of 68 years, with his wonderful wife, Ruby Lee Pierce, who still lives in Mesa, AZ. He moved to Arizona and managed the citrus farm in Mesa. The last 25 years they have spent much of their retirement in Snowflake, Arizona. He has 7 children of whom are Bill, who passed on in 1972, Bob and David who live in Snowflake; John, Linda and Debi who live in Mesa and Betty who lives in Glendale. He has 22 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren. . . totaling 81. His favorite way to spend his time was on a lake or by a stream fishing and camping with his family. He could fix any vehicle even if he had to use baling wire and tape. Our dad always had a big wide smile on his face and loved to tell stories and jokes to everyone. Dad, we will all miss you very much and while you are in heaven: "Don't take any wooden nickels!" Visitation for friends and family will be Monday, September 6, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m., Bunker's University Chapel, 3529 E. PIERCE, Nancy Granieri
Nancy Granieri Pierce, 77, of Phoenix, passed away September 5, 2004. Nancy was raised in the eastern Arizona town of Clifton. She was born to Joseph and Helen Swain Granieri in San Pedro, California during a summer vacation on August 15, 1927. She finished grade school and most of her high school in Clifton - ultimately graduating from Tucumcari, New Mexico high school. Nancy was precocious as a child and was intellectually exceptional throughout her lifetime. She led the life of an eclectic, pursuing a range of personal interests in arts, drama and a continuing lifelong love of education - amassing hundreds of hours of university credits. She earned a B. S. degree in Psychology from Arizona State University in 1954. She was a voracious reader - sometimes reading 3 or 4 books a day. She was perhaps best described by her friends as "cosmopolitan". She had an outstanding alto voice and was a member of the Bach and Madrigal Society, the St. Stephens choir, Christ Church of the Ascension choir, Cantemus and several other singing groups. She was a member of the Cultural Committee of the Governor's Arizona-Mexico Commission. She was the Librarian for Scottsdale Loloma school. She wrote self-teaching texts for Learning, Inc. of Scottsdale. She accepted a position of Supervisor of Programmed Instruction and Evaluation for Honeywell, Inc. in Massachusetts and developed training texts for the Cobalt language. She belonged to the Phoenix Little Theater, the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Young Audiences - and did public relations work for most of the organizations she supported. She worked for the US Air Force Dependents High School in Dreux, France - acting as a teacher of Speech and Public Speaking, librarian, editor of the school yearbook, and created a Drama department which presented the first play ever done at the school. And, she was a continuing "Friend of PBS" Channel 8. Nancy led a rich and rewarding life. Her many friends will miss her warm and unselfish contributions to the groups with which she belonged. She is survived by her brothers, Joe and Charles Granieri, her half-sister Mari Markey, her niece Candis Wattis and her nephews, Swain, Duane and Charles Granieri. Her husband John Pierce preceded her in death in 1995. Services for Nancy will be held at Christ Church of the Ascension, 4015 E. Lincoln Blvd. at 11 A. M. on Saturday, September 11, 2004. PIKE, Annie CARTWRIGHT
Annie Cartwright Pike, 104, was brought to Arizona by her parents in a covered wagon two days before her fifth birthday in September 1874. Her father, R. J. Cartwright, homesteaded at what is now 51st Avenue and Thomas. Mrs. Pike died Monday, June 17, 1974, in John C. Lincoln Hospital. She attended Isaac and Mesquite Elementary schools, now Riverside, until a new school was built and named in honor of the Cartwright family in 1884. Her brother-in-law, Tom Brockman donated the first plot of land for the new school. Mrs. Pike and her husband operated a livery stable in the 1900s where A.L.Moore & Sons Mortuary now maintains a parking lot on West Adams. Several of the Pike children were born there. She was born in Dayton, Calif., and was a member of the Glendale Church of Christ. Sons, Jess M., Elzy J., Vernon C., and Albert E. Pike; a brother, Elmer A. Philip Pike, 77, passed away September 21, 2004. Born August 14, 1927 in Newark, NJ, Philip lived most of his life in the neighboring town of Kearny, NJ. He served his country, joining the Navy in 1945. In 1949 he married Roberta Schoem, who remained his wife and sweetheart for 55 years. Philip, an active member of the Jewish War Veterans and president of the Kearny Lions Club, was a pharmacist. He owned his own business in Kearny, Midtown Drugs, from 1953 to 1987. Devoted husband, father and community member, Philip was always generous to others. He particularly loved traveling and golf. Prescott -- Edward J. Poley, Sr., died Sunday, May 14, 1967, at Yavapai Community Hospital. He was a native of Fostoria, Ohio, and came to Prescott in 1919. He owned and operated a cattle ranch at Tonta Flats, near Skull Valley for 30 years. He retired and moved to Prescott in 1953. Chiara "Katie" DiMieri Provenzano Pollack, 84 years old, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 18, 2004 surrounded by her family and completed her journey home with God to join her husband Gaspare Provenzano, second husband Michael Pollack, daughter Luci Leeman, her parents, and brothers and sisters. She is survived by daughter, Maria DeClair (Marv) of Queen Creek, AZ, daughter Kathleen Matos (Dave) of Augusta, GA, son Peter Provenzano (Debby) of Jeannette, PA, twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren to whom she was known as Nunny. She was born in Wilmerding, PA on January 28, 1920 and retired to sunny Arizona in 1980. Her incredible zest for life, determination, and persistence inspired countless adventures, fun times, and fond memories. Most of all she loved her family and friends, never missing an event all over the country. Before retiring, she was the owner of her family run business "Katie's Italian Foods", worked at Westinghouse Airbrake, and was a cook at Jeannette hospital and other facilities. She loved to travel, gamble, play bingo, play cards and games, crochet, knit, bake specialty cookies, and carry-on Italian family traditions. She liked to keep busy, helping in whatever way she could for family and friends. She was a member of the Italian Sons & Daughters of America & Women of the Moose. She will be deeply missed. PORTER, Fred S.
Fred S, Porter, Jr., 65, who was a prominent Arizona businessman and sportsman, died at Phoenix Veterans Hospital. Mr. Porter, whose family founded the largest Western wear chain in the United States, was manager of Porters of Arizona for 16 years. He was a member of the Arizona Racing Commission when he resigned in 1962 to become its executive secretary. In 1964 he quit that job to become a vice president of Funks Greyhound Racing Circuit. Mr. Porter was in charge of special promotions at all Funk tracks. He was a charter member of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma and served as secretary of the organization. He was a Phoenix native and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and the University of Southern California. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Mr. Porter joined the Porter store in Tucson in 1937 and two years later became the manager. He continued in that job until joining the Navy in World War II. After his discharge, Mr. Porter returned to Phoenix to manage Porter's downtown store at First Street and Adams. Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Helen; sons, Barkley N. and Steven; a brother, William; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Christ Church of Ascension, 4015 E. POSTAWKO, Helen R.
Helen R. Postawko, With heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of Helen R. Postawko, 92. Helen was born on Sept. 15, 1912 by Harry and Jennie Standen in West New York, New Jersey. She had four sisters and three brothers. She re- sided in the New York area for 32 yrs. While there, she owned her own business. She married James Dillon and gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Eileen and Peggy. In 1944, she moved to Carson City Nevada and married Leon Postawko. They had a loving marriage that lasted 51 yrs until Leon's passing. While there, they were active members of St. Teresa's Church. She worked as a Executive Secretary for the Federal Govt. and was also a realtor. In 1978, they moved to Sun City West, Az. They were members of Our Lady Of Lourdes Church and Johnson's Lawn Bowlers Club. They won several medals as partners in the Senior Olympics. On Sept. 26, 2004, Helen passed on at Hospice Family Care in Peoria Az. Helen was a devote Catholic. She was a strong and independent woman who had great moral and religious character. Helen was predeceased by her parents Harry and Jennie Standen, siblings Nadeline Standen, Genevieve Rowand, Frances Harvey, Ruth Moore, Harry Standen, Edward Standen, husband Leon Postawko, children Eileen McKnight and Peggy Knox. She was survived by her brother John Standen, grandchildren Marilyn White, Joanne Chimeri, Jack McKnight, James McKnight, Craig Knox, Marcia Knudsen, great-grandchildren Julie and Ryan White, Jaclyn, Caroline, Gary and Billy Chimeri, John and Timothy McKnight, Danielle Wasyl, Christopher Knox, and David and Keegan Knudsen and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday Sept 29th from 3-5 pm, Camino Del Sol at 13738 Camino Del Sol in Sun City West. Buckeye -- Harry Clay Potter, 76, died May 11, 1967, in Maricopa County Hospital. He was a native of Lafayette County, MO, and came to Arizona in 1936. He was a retired farmer. Services for Mrs. Marian Potter, 62, who died Thursday, Aug. 17, 1967, at Phoenix Community Hospital, were at Sunset Chapel, 301 W. Camelback. Cremation followed. Mrs. Potter, 502 W. POTTER, Stanley Carleton
Stanley Carleton Potter, 88, who had been a postmaster in Woodbridge, N. J., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1982. Private services were held. He moved to Arizona in 1973 from his native Woodbridge. He was in the Navy during World War I. He was president of the Barron Library in Woodbridge and the Alpine Cemetery in Perth Amboy, N. J. He was a tenor soloist with the church choir. Survivors include his wife, Hope; sons, Richard and Stanley, Jr.; daughter, Gloria Marshall; a brother and nine grandchildren. 10/2/1982.

POTTS, Charles Thomas
STANLEY -- Charles Thomas Potts was born December 5, 1917 and died on September 21, 2011. Charlie Edgar and Mary Kate Morrell Potts raised seven children: Martha Rachel, Charles Thomas, Anna Belle, James Odie, Clyde Joseph, Herbert Kent, and Nell Arizona, near Bristol, Tennessee. Charles lived a happy childhood with his siblings who nicknamed him 'Rosebud' later shortened to 'Bud'. His early education included Troublesome School and Sunrise School through eighth grade. In World War II, he served in the United States Air Force from 1941-1945, in active duty in India and Ceylon. Vlada Marie Morris became his wife on May 24, 1942, before he left for the war and traveled with him 1/4 out West 3/8 upon his return. He attended Southwestern Theological Seminary in 1948-49, and Grand Canyon College in 1950-52. Daniel Alan was born in 1952. Shortly after, the family moved to Bristol, Tennessee. Ten years later the family moved to Stanley, North Carolina to assist in caring for Vlada's mother. Judy Lynne Greene was added as a daughter-in-law and Charles received two grand children: Miranda Lynne Potts Buchanan and Daniel Cameron Potts. Grace Marie Hendrix, Ada Elizabeth Buchanon and Daniel Mason Potts are his great-grandchildren. During his life, Charles worked at many occupations. He was a Bible Teacher for the Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia Schools. At other times he did carpentry work, cabinet making, was a machinist of metal products, a house painter and a salesman. Great joy came from his work at church as he served as teacher, deacon, mission leader and taught in the jail ministry. His love of automobiles was a passion that kept him buying, repairing and selling. His annual garden was grown as much to share the bounty with others as it was to feed his family. Throughout his life, he sought new friendships and kept in contact with old friends. He loved his immediate and extended family and made time to visit everyone. POTUZAK, Nancy Rose
Nancy Rose Potuzak, 24, of 5125 N. 40th St., a membeer of the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra, died of an illness Jan. 24, 1980, in Doctors Hospital. Miss Potuzak was graduated from Arcadia High School in 1973. She was a flutist in the band and was a member of the Theater Group and Arcadia Choral. As a violinist, she was concertmistress with the Phoenix High School Orchestra Symphonettes and the Youth Symphony. She was attending Arizona State University on a music scholarship and played one of the leads in the musical "Oklahoma." She would have received a degree in education in June. She was born in Prescott and attended Ingleside Elementary School in Phoenix. She was employed at the Magic Pan in Scottsdale. Survivors include her parents, Charles J. and Beverly H. Potuzak; a brother; and a great-grandmother. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Lakeshore Mortuary Chapel, 1815 S. Dobson, Mesa. Published in The Arizona Republic Saturday, January 26, 1980.

Mrs. Helene Faye Pouquette, 33, wife of Felix Pouquette, Chandler rancher and cattleman, died yesterday (3 Jan 1960) in St. Joseph's Hospital. Mrs. Pouquette was born in Cushing, Oklahoma, and came to Phoenix with her husband and family in 1944. Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Felix Joseph, Jr., Pierre Henry, and Leon Joseph; three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Gates, Lakewood, CA, Mrs. Richard Sanford, Lancaster, CA, and Mrs. Robert Ramsey, Anaheim, CA; two brothers, Charles Hann, Lakewood, CA, and Fred Hann, Lancaster, CA; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hann, Lancaster. POWELL, Janice L.
Janice L. Powell, 66, a three-year resident of Monticello, Ind., died Feb. 4, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette, Ind. She was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Moores Hill, Ind., to Elmo James Powell and Beatrice Lavon Michael. Janice had lived in the Monticello community for the last three years, coming from Jones, Okla. She graduated from Benson High School in Benson, Ariz. and from Grand Canyon College. Janice was a civil servant for several years and had served in Japan for 13 years. She raised show ponies and horses. Janice also raised and raced harness horses. She enjoyed going to the 4-H fair to watch the horses. Janice enjoyed writing poetry and had even had a few of her poems published. She enjoyed reading, watching all kinds of movies, and working with her computer. Janice was a member of the Twin Lakes Southern Baptist Church of Monticello, Ind. She had served as the church secretary at both Benson, Ariz. and Jones, Okla. Janice was also the editor of the Southern Baptist Press while living in Oklahoma. Funeral services were held at Twin Lakes Southern Baptist Church, Monticello, Ind., officiated by Pastor Ross Terry. Miller - Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello, Ind. is in charge of arrangements. Removal will take place Feb. 8, 2006, in the Richardson's Remembrance Center, located at Benson, Ariz. Graveside services were held at Cochise Gardens of Rest in Benson, officiated by Pastor A.B. Blair. Preceded in death by sisters, Donabelle Mae Pyles and Joyce Eileen Heck. Survivors include one sister, Beatrice Marie Rowlen of Jones, Okla.; one brother, Meredith James Powell of Benson, Ariz.; eight nieces, six nephews and several cousins. Paulden - Mrs. Essie M. Pownall, 82, (headstone) was born in Manchester, Ohio, and came to Phoenix in 1902. She died Thurs., Jan. 1, 1970, in Yavapai Community Hospital, Prescott. In 1924, she and her husband settled and built the town of Paulden. Mr. Pownall died in 1938. Daughter, Mrs. Ruth GILPIN of Paulden. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery, Prescott.
