8 Nov 1896 - 14 Mar 1980 Caterina Miceli, 83, who came here a year and a half ago from Michigan, died March 14, 1980. Mrs. Miceli was boren in Italy and was a homemaker. Survivors include her sons, Casper, Frank, Tony, John and Vince; 22 grandchildren. Mass was at St. Louis the King Catholic Church, 4331 W. Maryland. MICHELS, Burnas Jane
Burnas Jane Michels, (87), loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Burnas was born on August 29, 1917, in South Bend, Indiana, to Christina Hoeflinger and Henry Haslinger. It was in South Bend that she met her husband, Carroll "Bud" Michels. They were married on February 15, 1941. She was widowed in March 1945 after Bud's B-24 aircraft attacked by a German jet plane. Burnas worked for the State of Arizona for many years before retiring in 1979. She loved to bowl and belonged to many leagues. Burnas loved to travel and took many trips around the United States and the world. Burnas was a loving and generous person who will be dearly missed. We are grateful for all the years we had with her and take comfort that she is now with the Lord. Burnas is survived by her only child, Carroll "Mick" Michels, granddaughter Lisa Glenn, granddaughter Shannon Lopez and her husband Michael. She also has six beautiful great-grandchildren: Taylor Nicholle Glenn (9), Bryce Ashton Glenn (8), Connor David Glenn (3), Mateo David Lopez (5), Christian Mark Lopez (2) and Sophia Jane Lopez (8 weeks). She is also survived by numerous nieces and newphews. A funeral mass was held on Monday, September 20, 2004, at St. Francis Xavier. Internment to flollow at a later date. MIHALCHICK, Mary Gujda
Mary Gujda Mihalchick of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on Tuesday morning September 7, 2004 at the age of 84. Mary was the oldest of two sons and a daughter, and was born Mary Gujda in Stankovce Slovakia January 13, 1920. Mary, her mother, and brother Michael immigrated to the United States in 1930. June 14th, 1942 began an enduring marriage to Joseph Mihalchick, which produced six children and lasted until Mr. Mihalchick's death in 1978. In 1965 the Mihalchick family moved to Scottsdale Arizona to relieve the suffering of Mr. Mihalchick's rheumatoid arthritis. Joe and Mary Mihalchick contacted other Byzantine Catholic families in the Valley of the Sun, and was one of the founding families of St. Stephen's Byzantine Catholic Church in Phoenix, in 1968. During her long and happy life, Mary worked as a seamstress and in retail sales. The family owned a total of three businesses, including two restaurants and a real estate brokerage. Mary was proudest of St. Stephen's Byzantine Catholic church, and of her children. Her parents and brothers Michael and Albert preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Joseph and wife Kathleen, John and wife Karen, Thomas Mihalchick and wife LeeAnn, daughters Sr. Barbara Jean OSBM, Mary Beth Foster and husband Doug, and Margaret Ann Cook and husband David, and grandchildren Joseph Chester Mihalchick and Mary May Cook. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 to 7 PM with a Parastas at 7 PM and the funeral Mass at 9 AM on Monday, September 13th all at St. Stephen's Byzantine Catholic Church, 8141 N. 16th Street. Dr. Vego Mikkelson, 76, who had been Arizona State veterinarian from 1943 to 1947, died Sunday, May 14, 1967, in his home. He moved to Phoenix in 1935 and retired from practice here in 1966. He was born in Devils Lake, N.D., and was graduated from Ohio State University in 1917. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Dr. C. E. He was founder and owner of his own water treatment business, Adept Water Treatment Co. in Phoenix for 28 years. He was also known for his invention of the reflective safety triangles whose use Congress mandated for all trucking firms. Miller, Jr. at the University of Arizona, and they were married in 1950. They raised four children; Deborah (Ted) Sheely, Cecily (Scott) Buell, Ellen Luckey and Matt (Kim) Miller. In addition to Cecil and her children, Alzora is survived by her sister Ellen (Earl) Warner, brother-in-law Duane (Beverly) Miller and thirteen grandchildren. MILLER, Martha Dixon
April 23, 1921 - May 3, 2006 Marthagene Hope Suttis was born to William Burton Suttis and Drusilla Hewett (nee Harding) Suttis, in Josephine, PA. Martha was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Martha's father died in 1934, and her mother supported the family by renting the second floor of the family home to boarders. Martha graduated from high school in 1939 and subsequently pursued an artistic career. In the early 1940's Martha served as Scientific and Botanical Illustrator for the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University. While in that position she illustrated "Plant Life of the Pacific World" by Elmer D. Merrill, Harvard University's Administrator of Botanical Collections and Director of the Arnold Arboretum. The book was published in 1945 by The Macmillan Company of New York. Martha married Lajos (Lou) Koteles on July 21, 1945. After Lou's discharge from the U.S. Navy, Martha accompanied him to Providence, RI where Lou studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Martha worked in a downtown business office. The couple hand-decorated their apartment, and the result was featured in the Providence Sunday Journal's Home Section in April of 1948. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where her 4:08 PM 1/30/2015 only child was born. In 1953 Martha left her husband and moved to the Phoenix, AZ area. The divorce was finalized in 1955. Martha was married to William "Bill" Dixon for 12 years. She was a juried member of the Arizona Artists Guild. In 1984 Martha married Steven Miller and moved to Chehalis, WA. Sterling Grayson Miller came into our lives on October 28th, 1981 and went home to be with God on September 1st, 2004. Sterlings passions were playing Baseball and a good game of Ice Hockey. He always looked forward to, and seldom said no to a long motorcycle ride or a cruise around the block on his skateboard. Of all these things, Sterling felt most at home working on cars, be it his own or a friends. Probably one of the strongest memories of Sterling was his constant desire to do anything for a friend. He is so loved by everyone that knew him and will be so deeply missed. Wynn R. Millett, 81, of Sunnyvale, CA, passed away August 24, 2004 in Sunnyvale. Born September 20, 1922 in Mesa to Robert Alma and Rowena Avenel Millett. Preceded by his parents; wife of 58 years, Polly (2001); and son Bruce (2003). Wynn is survived by brothers: Maurice (Rueda), and Eldon (Peggy); and a sister Erjuana; 4 children, Sandy Lutz (Bob), Dennis (Cathy), Jan Harris (Keith) and Lesli Johnson; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A 1941 graduate of Mesa High School, where he played in the marching band. Wynn served three years during World War II in the South Pacific with the 11th Airborne Division (Army). Returning to Mesa after the war, he started a life long career working in the paint business, first with O. S. Stapley, then Lenhart's, ending his career retiring in 1987, after 25 years with the Sherwin Williams Paint Company. Wynn was an expert working with colors. After retirement, he put his talent with colors on canvas with oils, acrylics and watercolors. This in addition to caring for his wife Polly and gardening. Funeral services were Monday this week for Charles Mitchell, 70, of Wickenburg, who died last Wednesday Community Hospital.
