METZEL, Bill
Alexander
Bill Alexander Metzel, of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Fair Oaks,
Calif., died August 26, 2004 peacefully at home surrounded by his family after
an incredibly courageous 19-year battle against medical odds. A self-proclaimed
"artist, natural athlete, lover, intellect, cheap thrill seeker and all 'round
nice guy," Billy, Uncle Bill, Wild Bill, B. A. M. was 78 years young. He was
born Oct. 7, 1925 in Whitehall, Mont., raised in Dillon and spent summers at the
family's York Ranch in the Ruby Valley. His family moved to California where he
attended San Bernardino Valley College, served in the Air Force while stationed
in Bakersfield, and married Marla, his college sweetheart. Four children later,
they moved to Carmichael where they raised their family at the beloved "adobe"
home to countless great times had by all. A graphic designer by profession, he
was also a talented cartoonist, illustrator, painter and writer. After a long
career with the State of California, Bill retired in 1985 as Chief of Graphic
Services for Caltrans. In 1998, he and Marla relocated to Sun City Grand in
Arizona. Whether it was skiing, golf, partying, hot tubbing, growing his crops,
sky diving or flying ultra lights, Bill was a player. He loved music---from Stan
Kenton, to Willie, to the Grateful Dead---his collection was vast and eclectic.
And color filled his life---the more, the brighter, the better. Writing was his
special gift. An accomplished wordsmith, his works were sheer entertainment,
intricately laced with his great sense of humor and wit. And skiing was his
passion. . . . . from the early days of hiking up San Gorgonio, to ski racer,
jumper, and instructor, to founding member of FARRTS
(Fat-Aging-Rummy-Run-down-Tired-Skiers, a non-profit organization devoted to
Sporty Things), he loved it. He gave all his children the gift of skiing at an
early age and recouped his investment by frequently visiting them when they all
eventually migrated to Sun Valley, Id. It was there on Baldy that Bill took his
last run at age 77. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years. Survivors
include daughters Carla Sinclair (Mills), Scottsdale, Ariz., Molly Metzel,
Redondo Beach, Calif.; sons, Mick (Lu Ann), Hailey, Id., Eric (Jane), Sisters,
Ore; and grandchildren Tyler Metzel and Megan and Maddie Sinclair. The family
especially thanks his special friend Linda, without whose unconditional support
would not have enabled Bill to ride that last wave. A celebration of Bill
Metzel's life will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, 12 noon at Ancil Hoffman
Park, Carmichael. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Bill's
name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Az 85014, or---do
something nice for someone you love. Published in the Arizona Republic on
9/3/2004.
