JUANARENA, Thomas Dennis
Thomas Dennis Juanarena, 82, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2004. He was born September 1, 1922. He was the first born to Hilario and Carmen Juanarena, Spanish Basque Sheepherder immigrants from Spain, in Chico, CA. There he attended Elementary, High School and Chico State Collage. In 1960 Tom moved to Phoenix, AZ where he met and married Lucille Blair on May 13, 1961. In 1969 Tom built the first R. V. Park, Playa De Oro, on the beach of the Sea of Cortez in Rocky Point, Mexico. He and Lucy had many great friends there. Visitors loved this wonderful place, especially Tom & Lucy's hospitality. For a period of time Tom was appointed Secretary of Tourism in the R. P. area. After selling Playa De Oro in 1986, Tom built Playa Elegante R. V. Park, just down the beach from Playa De Oro. Over the years, Tom was very instrumental in the development of the R. P. area. He helped support the city in many ways. Tom has been likened to the man in the song "Juantanamera" because he also "came down from hills and planted palm trees". Tom was an avid fisherman, loving fresh water fly-fishing in Oak Creek & Montana, and deep-sea fishing in the Sea of Cortez from his own boat. He loved to play Gin Rummy & watch sports events on T. V. He loved kids. He told great stories and jokes which his grandchildren loved to hear over & over again. We will miss "Grandpa Tom" in his Levi's, boots, red suspenders, tattered old straw cowboy hat and of course his cigars. Vaya Con Dios Tomas! Thanks for the great memories. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Don & Cecil, and his sister Evalina. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, his daughters, Voniece Nip & Patricia Guthrie, and children Tommie Anderson & Nancy Friesen, from a previous marriage.
