Sun City - Emil Joens, 78, who owned a wholesale food company 18 years in Waterloo, Iowa, died Sept. 29, 1980, in Boswell Hospital. He was graduated from Long Beach, Calif. City College and was a member of the Masonic Shrine, Methodist CHurch and Lions, all in Iowa. He came here from Jefferson, Iowa in 1970. JOHNS, Jared Curtis
Safford -- Jared Curtis (Curt) Johns, 88, a Gila Valley resident since 1894 and a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Wed., Sep. 6, 1967, while visiting a son in Bakersfield, CA. He was a native of Portage, Utah, and came to Thatcher 73 years ago. He farmed throughout the Gila Valley and quarried rock to build the LDS church in Thatcher. He was watermaster for the San Jose and Union canal companies. Surviving are five sons, Carl of Bakersfield, Jared of Blythe, CA, Edward of Mesa, Norman of Grant Station, CA, LaVon of Farmington, NM; two daughters, Mrs. Josie JACOBSON of Lakeside and Mrs. Ruth CLONTS of La Puente, CA; a brother out of state; and 26 grandchildren. Masonic funeral services were held in San Diego Saturday for Edward Allen Johnson, 64, native Arizonan and former Phoenix resident, who died Wednesday in a San Diego hospital. Entombment in Greenwood Mausoleum there. Mr. Johnson, a resident of San Diego the past 37 years, had been a partner in Markel-Johnson Co., a poultry firm. Born in Jerome, he lived in McCabe two years before coming to Phoenix with his parents. He attended old Central School and was graduated from Phoenix Union High School. Mr. Johnson, prominent in Masonic circles in California, was a past master of San Diego Masonic Lodge No. 35 and treasurer of the lodge at his death. He was a 33rd Degree Mason. JOHNSON, Leland Leroy
Leland Leroy Johnson, 55, born in Omaha, Nebraska entered into rest on Sept. 4, 2004. Leland is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Kathy Johnson, his children Andria Johnson and Aron (wife, PJ) Johnson, his father, DeIwin Johnson, grandson Brian J. Johnson, Jr. and two brothers Don Johnson of San Diego, CA and Randy Johnson, of Lincoln, Nebraska. Lee Proudly served his country in the US Air Force for four years. He then graduated in the top 3 of his class from the University of Nebraska. He was a proud member of the Vintage Thunderbird International Club for which he was President for 5 years and also a member of the Fabulous 50s Ford Club. He was a member of the DAV and the Glendale Sister City Program for eleven years. Lee was an avid golf player, he enjoyed playing his guitar, and was fascinated with anthropology, archeology and Greek mythology. In his free time he really enjoyed spontaneous traveling with his wife, cruising in his T-bird, cooking weekend breakfasts, Sunday golfing with his father, and spending time with his family and friends and his grandson, Brian. Lee will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 P. M. with a Funeral Service to begin at 4:00 P. M. on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at Lundberg Mortuary White Rose Chapel, 5310 W. Northern Ave., Glendale. She is survived by daughters: Dolores (Debby) (David) Ray, Lorraine (Lee) Hewitt and Mary Lou (George) Holzinger all of the Phoenix area. Grandchildren: David, Dawn, Maria and Lisa. Great Grandchildren: Jonathan, Jesse, David, Jr., and Nika. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, George and a grandson: Christopher Hewitt. Madeline was a very gracious lady who was born with a strong constitution. In her lifetime she went from a horse and buggy to a man on the moon. JOHNSON, R. Ellis
R. Ellis Johnson dies; Ran Rock Island Lines. Scottsdale - R. Ellis Johnson, 64, retired president of the Rock Island Railroad, died Wednesday, June 12, 1974, in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. Mr. Johnson, of 4828 N. 72nd Way, was born in Osawatomie, Kansas, and started his railroad career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1925. He joined the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1936, which later became the Rock Island Lines, and served as general manager, assistant vice president of operations, vice president of operations, executive vice president from 1954 to 1961, when he was elected president of the lines. He remained president until his retirement in 1970, when he moved to Scottsdale. He had been a winter visitor in the Valley since 1960. He also had served as director of the Kansas City Terminal Railway Co., the Waterloo Railway Co., the Railway Express Agnecy Directors Association of American Railroads, and the American Railway Engineers Association. Mr. Johnson had been a member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor, the Union League, and Western Railway Executives. He was a member of the Hiram Club of Scottsdale. Survivors include his wife, Julia M.; daughters, Mrs. Jack Garden and Mrs. George Miner; five brothers, and five grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. JOHNSON, Robert R.
Robert R. "Jay" Johnson, 55, retired senior civil engineer and chief executive with Associated Engineers, Inc., in Phoenix, died Oct. 27, 1982, in Flagstaff. Burke Johnson, Sunday editor of the Arizona Republic. Mrs. Johnson was born in Asheville, N. C. She came to Phoenix last November and resided at 202 E. McDowell. She had lived in San Francisco for 20 years prior to coming here. She was a U. S. government civil service clerk. The Rev. Culver Nelson officiated at the services. JOHNSON, Sigfred Ettelin
Sigfred E. Johnson, 77, of Scottsdale, former longtime Anchorage resident, died Feb. 13, 1994, following heart surgery at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Apex, Montana. He was a retired engineer technician who lived six months of the year in Arizona and six months in Alaska. He left Dillon, Mont., in 1947, for Anchorage, where he lived for 47 years. Mr. Johnson had worked 21 years for the federal government. After retirement in 1978, he was active in senior-citizen programs and organizations. He was the first president of Alaska Federation of Retired Federal Employees and a former president of its Anchorage chapter. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Older Persons Action Group. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian Louise Johnson of Scottsdale; son, Fred Edward Johnson of Anchorage; sisters, Elinor McCauley of Dillon, Mont., and Beatrice Underwood of North Platte, Neb.; daughter, Carol Louise Moseley of Phoenix; and four grandchildren, Jaime Moseley, Stephanie Moseley, Rydeen Stevens and Lance O'Donovan. Alfred B. Jones, 87, of Glendale, Arizona, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Odyssey Hospice in Glendale, Arizona. He was born in November, 1916 in Louisiana. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific aboard a destroyer. He worked for the U. S. Geological Survey, Topographic Division for 34 years and retired in 1972. He was a 32 year resident of Sun City, Arizona, and an avid golfer, fisherman and gardener. Alfred is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Della Jones; two sons, Stanley and Fred; three granddaughters: Christine Roelle, Michelle Cook, Cheri Solarzano; and eight great grandchildren. JONES, Virgil Worth
Virgil Worth Jones, 89, passed away September 22, 2004 in his home in Mesa. Born May 9, 1915 in Berino, New Mexico, he grew up in Virden, New Mexico. He served a mission for the LDS church in the northwestern states and while there, he met his future wife, Nellie Mae Baker. They were married and sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple and then moved to Virgils hometown of Virden where he farmed for almost forty years. He was constantly involved in serving others through community, occupational and church organizations. He served as mayor of Virden for 15 years, and served in Scouting leadership for most of his adult life, receiving the Silver Beaver recognition for his efforts. He served on numerous agricultural boards and associations including a term as president of the Hidalgo County Farm Bureau Association. He was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership capacities. After retirement, they moved to Mesa. He is survived by his three sons: Gary of Mesa, Spencer of Guatemala City, and Lorden of Mesa, and two sisters, Amelia of Idaho, and Myrtle of Virden. He also has four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be Saturday, September 25, at 11:00 a. m. at the Cornerstone Ward Chapel at the intersection of Mesa Drive and University, with visitation one hour prior to the service. JORGENSEN, Roy Ernst
Roy Ernst Jorgensen, was Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc. a well-respected international engineering and management firm headquartered since 1988 in Buckeystown, Maryland. He founded the firm in Bethesda, Maryland in 1961 after a successful career as a highway-planning engineer with the federal Bureau of Public Roads, as Deputy Highway Commissioner and Chief Engineer for the Connecticut Highway Department, and as Engineering Counsel for the National Highway Users Conference. Mr. Jorgensen played an important role during the Eisenhower administration in developing the legislation that created the Interstate Highway System. His founding of the Roy Jorgensen Associates firm in 1961 offered him the opportunity to pioneer the implementation of highway planning and organizational and management concepts that were ahead of the times. Over the years his firm has been involved in consulting, operations and training assignments in 48 states, numerous cities and counties and more than 20 foreign countries. His professional memberships included: The International Road Federation, the Institute of Traffic and Transportation Engineers, the American Association of State Highway Officials and the National Academy of Sciences Highway Research Board, the American Public Works Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers and The Road Gang. He was also a member of The Cosmos Club of Washington, DC. In addition to his engineering career, Mr. Jorgensen had great interest in agriculture. In recognition of that long held interest he established in 1997 the Jorgensen Endowment for beef research at the University of Maryland School of Agriculture. At that time at Hedgeapple Farm in Buckeystown he founded and endowed the Jorgensen Family Foundation, Inc. for beef research and education and gifted a conservation easement on the farm acreage to the Maryland Environmental Trust to assure perpetual land protection. Roy Jorgensen was born in Sacramento, California on April 6, 1908 to Danish immigrants and graduated from the University of California with a degree in Civil Engineering. He leaves his wife Jessie Mortland Jorgensen of Scottsdale, Arizona, his sons Peter of Jackson, Wyoming and John of Buckeystown, Maryland, four grandchildren; John Jr. of Buckeystown, Maryland, Lisa of Asheville, North Carolina, Arne of Jackson, Wyoming, and Kari of Ashland, Oregon, and four great-grandchildren Alexander, Nicholas, Annika, and Tate and two step grandchildren, Paul Huser of Jackson, Wyoming and Heidi Hackler of Seattle, Washington, two step great-grandchildren, Sara Jane, Noelle. Muriel P. Joy, 53, a former member of Creighton Methodist Church, died Thurs., Sep. 28, 1967 in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Joy had been employed four years by Goodyear Aeorspace and three years in the records department of Good Samaritan Hospital. Recently she and her husband owned the Sun Valley Nursey and Landscaping Co. She was born in Sault Sainte Marie, Canada, and moved to Phoenix 25 years ago from Descanso, CA. Survivors include her husband, Robert; a son, Richard D. of Phoenix; four brothers and two sisters out of state. Burial in Memory Lawn Cemetery. 9/30/1967.

JOY, Robert Curtis
Robert Curtis Joy, age 66, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, died at home in Wickenburg, Friday, Aug. 27, 2004. Born in Holden, Missouri, he lived most of his life in Shawnee, Kansas. He earned his BA in Economics from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas and after graduating, married Barbara Rogers Joy. Bob worked with his father, Curtis D. Joy in Real Estate investments for 25 years before moving to Arizona in 1985. He lived in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and the Carefree/Cave Creek area before moving 'further out' to Wickenburg in January 2004. A Christian all his life, he worshipped at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, Black Mountain Community Church, and finally, First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg. He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 44 years, his son, Curt Joy, his daughter, Kristen Joy Rehorn, son-in-law, Scott Rehorn, and two granddaughters, Kassie and Tatum Rehorn of Arizona, his mother, Ruth Joy, and sister, Darlene Vaughn of Kansas. A memorial service will be held Sept. 7 at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church in Carefree at 2:00 P. M. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Black Mountain Community Church, P. O. Services for Mrs. Helen Joyce, 86, long-time Arizona resident who died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1960, in a Phoenix hospital, will be today in Grimshaw Mortuary, 334 W. Monroe. JOYCE, Patrick F.
Patrick F. Joyce, 74, of Phoenix, an Army veteran who served in the 117th Infantry, 30th Division in World War II, died Nov. 14, 182, in a local hospital. Mr. Joyce moved to Phoenix in 1971 from Chicago, where he was employed by the M & M Mars Co. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Connin; three brothers, one sister and four grandchildren. Services will be Friday at Sherwood Baptist Church, 5406 E. Virginia. Whitney and Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home handled arrangements. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1982.
