quietly in his sleep. He will be greatly missed by his family and the many great
friends he has made since first coming to the Valley in 1942. Only recently Les
and his wife, Dorothy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home in
Central Phoenix in which they have been living for the past 45 years. Les had
lived a full and prosperous 88 years. In the spring of 1940 and prior to the
outbreak of war in the US, while living in Gramercy Park in New York City, Les
decided to enlist in the famous 'old 69th' Irish Regiment. He later joined the
newly formed Army Air Force, trained as a bombardier at Williams Air Force Base
here in the Valley, and was subsequently assigned to Port Moresby, New Guinea to
fight in the Papuan and New Guinea Campaigns. He was shot down in August 1943,
carrying an injury with him the rest of his life. After a short recovery period
he was re-assigned as a liaison officer until the end of the war. Promoted to
Captain, he had by then earned the Army Commendation Medal and two Oak Leaf
Clusters for meritorious service, the Purple Heart, the Presidential Citation
with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Defense Ribbon with one star, the
American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two stars and, of
course, the Victory Ribbon. While stationed at Williams Air Force Base, Les was
introduced to his future wife Dorothy by a dear friend in November 1942, and
after many interruptions were married by Bishop Kinsolving at Trinity Cathedral
in Phoenix, on April 1, 1944. Les took great pride in the fact that he was a
Life Member of the Thunderbirds, a member of the Phoenix Country Club, the
Riding Club and a past member of the Arizona Club, the Kiva Club and the Valley
of the Sun Kiwanis. He cherished the many friendships that grew out of these
organizations and the wonderful relationships that he and Dorothy made in 60
years of marriage. As his friends and colleagues knew, his passion for the game
of golf lasted his entire life. Les was a man who was never shy to express his
feelings nor his undying love for Dorothy, his love of this Country and his
thanks to have been blessed with so many wonderful friends. He is survived by
his wife; Dorothy Taylor Heitel, daughters; Kathryn Heitel Bamberl, husband
John; and Nancy Heitel Smith, husband Stef, children Derrick and Natalie; sons;
Robert Glenn Heitel, wife, Myrna, children, Jessica and Alyssa; James Taylor
Heitel, wife, Cathy; and John Clark Heitel, wife Terri, children Hailey and
Ashleigh; niece; Galen Hance Stallman, husband, Gary, daughter, Jennifer;
nephews; Richard Montgomery Hance III, wife, Patti; Edward Keith Hance, wife,

or gifts, the family is requesting donations be made to either All Saints

would like to sign off by saying: 'Over'. Published in The Arizona Republic from
