HARMAN, Fred
Fred Harman, 79, creator of the Red Ryder
and Little Beaver comic strip and a Western artist, died in John C. Lincoln
Hospital, January 2, 1982. Mr. Harman had suffered a stroke Dec. 27 and died
without regaining consciousness. A victim of emphysema, he had moved to Phoenix
from his native Pagosa Springs, Colorado, home five years ago for health
reasons. The character 'Red Ryder' first appeared in 1938 and evolved out of a
strip known as Bronc Peeler, which Mr. Harman originated after leaving Kansas
City, where he and Walt Disney produced advertising materials for the Film Ad
Co. Mr. Harman and Disney left that firm and went into partnership in a
short-lived venture to produce news films after which Disney moved to California
and Mr. Harman went back to his ranch and began drawing his comic strip. Mr.
Harman moved to Hollywood in 1934 and while on a business trip to New York,
developed the Red Ryder and Little Beaver characters, according to his son, Fred
Harman, Jr. The strip was distributed by the McNaught Syndicate. At the peak of
its popularity, it appeared in 750 newspapers in the United States plus 'a horde
of others overseas,' Harman Jr., said. During the 1940s and 1950s, Mr. Harman
was involved in the creation of 40 Red Ryder movies. Working with other
cartoonists, he also spent much of World War II entertaining U. S. troops in the
European and Pacific theaters. He spent a considerable amount of time on similar
tours during the Korean War. Mr. Harman stopped drawing the strip in 1962 and
returned to Pagosa Springs to resume work as a Western artist. "He had the strip
going over 30 years, and he wanted to get back into the art that he really
wanted to do," his son said. Mr. Harman's works, done in oils and watercolors,
have sold for as much as $20,000, and his bronze statues for as much as $10,000,
the younger Harman said. "He never had to do any research. He was very famous
for his portrayal of the balance and motion of horses and his knowledge of
American Indians." Mr. Harman was a founder of the Cowboy Artists Association,
and some of his work is displayed in the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
He also published a book, The Great West in Paintings. He was active in Boys
Clubs of America and was honored in 1958 by the Sertoma Clubs of Colorado for
his contributions to that state. Harman, Jr., said he received this recent
communique from his ailing father: "I'm just an ol' has-been who seems not to
fit anymore. I've eaten my apples while ranging. 'Bout all that is left is the
core.' In addition to his son, Mr. Harman is survived by his wife, Lola. Private
services are planned, followed by cremation. A memorial service will be
conducted in the spring in Pagosa Springs, Harman, Jr., said. 3-Jan-1982
