GALLAGHER, Francis J.
Rev. Francis J. Gallagher, S. J. - In Los Gatos, CA on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, of complications from a stroke and pneumonia, at age 80. He was born in Cleveland, OH then moved with his family to Tucson, AZ at age 12. He entered the Jesuits at Los Gatos, CA in 1942 after having attended both the University of Arizona and Santa Clara University for one year each. Frank's desire to become a priest developed very early in his life. His own predisposition, by nature and grace, was further influenced by his strong Catholic upbringing, his father's four brothers who were priests, and by his beloved Ursuline nuns who operated St. Joseph's Grammar School on the grounds of Villa Angela Academy in Cleveland. Frank was ordained to the priesthood in 1955 in San Francisco. He then served in three principal ministries: high schools, parishes and hospital chaplaincy. His love of the Southwest and the Spanish language began in his high school years in Tucson then developed further, as a Jesuit, in 25 years of service at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix where he taught Latin and Spanish and served as prefect of boarders. He also taught at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He served as both the first and last Jesuit pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Santa Ana, CA during the Jesuits' tenure at that parish, and he was the first Jesuit pastor at Mission Dolores parish in East Los Angeles in 1980. He also served briefly as pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows parish in Santa Barbara. From 1991 to 1996 Frank was assistant to the superior at Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, and then, until 2001, he served as chaplain at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Frank loved people and his outgoing, engaging nature and sense of humor shaped his priestly ministry. He had a special orientation to those were sick and struggling under life's burdens. Quick to empathize with other people's problems, he would regale those who listen, as well as those who would not, with stories of his own medical problems and various health calamities that the doctors were attempting to sort out. He did not at all mind being the object of his own jokes and humorous stories. Of his Irish/German heritage it was observed, "Frank inherited the sober industriousness of the Irish and the lighthearted wit of the Germans. " He was quick to learn the life circumstances of parishioners and employees, he maintained life-long friendships with students and their families, and he was a constant visitor to his Jesuit brothers in the infirmary at Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. As their Spanish teacher, he became know as "Uncle Frank/Tio Paco" to Jesuit seminarians. He was devoted to his brother and sisters and their families. A high point in his life occurred when they were able to join him, in 2002, when he celebrated 60 years as a Jesuit. His warm personality and loving heart, through which an abundance of God's grace and compassion flowed, will be greatly missed. He is survived by: his brother, Dr. Neil Gallagher and his wife Pat, of St. Louis, his sisters, Mary Jane Speer, Jackie Bell and Jeanne Smelker, all of Tucson, and their families. Vigil 7:30 PM, Thursday, September 9, Mass of the Resurrection 10:00 AM, Friday, September 10 - both at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. Committal will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara. Funeral arrangements by Darling & Fischer Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos, CA. Published in The Arizona Republic on 9/7/2004.

GARDNER, Penelope Ann
Penelope Ann Gardner - A kind and gentle heart stopped beating on the night of September 4, 2004. Born in Denver on January 28, 1948, and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Penny was the first child of Jay E. and Mary K. Gardner. She was big sister to John, Mark, Melanie and Andy. Penny spent her young adulthood in San Francisco, living on little other than dreams of a more loving world and great rock and roll. In 1976, she moved to Phoenix where Melanie had settled, finding work in property management. Most recently, Penny worked for Courtland Homes in an environment of caring and generous people who she treasured like family. In 1979, Penny's parents retired and relocated to Phoenix 'with the girls. ' For most of the last decade, she lived with and provided primary care to them as they aged. Penny was very close to her nine nieces and nephews. She encouraged them and celebrated every important event in their lives, which added greatly to the happiness in the families of her brothers and sister. Even during her battle with ovarian cancer, she made trips to attend the high school graduation of a niece in Colorado and the wedding of a nephew in New Jersey. Penny's love of children and her desire to share her life with others compelled her to become a long-term volunteer and mentor in Big Brothers and Big Sisters. A special wish for her little sister Breeanna is that she will be happy and grow up always remembering the fun times they shared together. Deep Friendships decorated Penny's life, literally and figuratively. Penny loved her home in Phoenix where she proudly displayed a hand-made pine dining table, new hardwood floors, distinctive paint schemes inside and out, original art, birdhouses and other evidence of tribute and labors of love. One of Penny's favorite items was a little plaque that read, "Friends are the greatest gifts that you can give yourself. " When you toured Penny's home, you became impressed with who her many friends were, not the furniture or the rooms. Her family and many friends will miss Penny and her caring nature that was so rare. Her family will distribute her ashes off the coast of Del Mar, California on Thursday evening, September 9th. Please join us in a celebration of her life by raising a glass with us at dusk in a toast. We need to thank her for letting us be a part of such a great but too short journey. You will honor Penny with donations to either the Virginia Piper Cancer Center or Hospice of the Valley. Her family praises the many doctors, nurses, and care givers who attended to her during her final days. Published in The Arizona Republic from 9/8/2004 - 9/9/2004.
