FLAGG, Mary H. W.
Mary H. W. Flagg, 95, who came to Arizona in 1913 from Rhode Island where she graduated from Pembroke College in Providence, died Oct. 14, 1979, in Santa Rosa Convalescent Center at Tucson. Mrs. Flagg was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Heard Museum, PHoenix Art Museum, Philatelic Society and Collectors Club of Phoenix. She was the widow of Arthur E. Flagg, former director of the Arizona Mineral Museum. Surviving are her children, Anne Hines, Edward C. and Richard W.; a sister, a brother; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary. FLAHERTY, Joseph Edward
Joseph Edward Flaherty of Mesa, Arizona passed away on September 18, 2005 surrounded by his devoted R.I. family and Arizona friends. He was the son of Edward Andreas and the late Evelyn (Black) Andreas. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1944, he served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. Joe received his bachelor's degree from RI College and then relocated to Arizona where he obtained a Masters in Economics at the Arizona State University. For the past 26 years, Joseph worked for the Arizona State Government in the Department of Transportation. Besides his parents, Joseph leaves behind a brother, Raymond Flaherty from Connecticut, three sisters Catherine Oneppo, Joyce Hedden and Jane Leveille all of Warwick, RI and seven nieces and nephews. He also leaves his Arizona family Jerry and Sandy Haupt and Mike Mayer of Tempe, Arnold Burnham of Phoenix, Norman Selover of Goodyear, Wade Morgan and Chris and Jonnalee Holmes of Knoxville, Tenn. Many considered Joe their best friend. His love for baseball, football, actively playing softball up until the last couple of years, along with annual Vegas trips with his circle of friends, will always keep him in our hearts. A VA Ceremony with full military honors will be held on November 12th in Scottsdale, Arizona. Arrangements were made through the Allen Funeral Home in Mesa. FLAM, Michael
Michael Flam, 35, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1976, of leukemia. He was assistant chief counsel for employment security matters under Attorneys General Bruce Babbitt and Gary Nelson. He graduated from Arizona State University and the University of Arizona Law School and was said to the the youngest attorney to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was born in New York and lived in Arizona 34 years. Survivors, wife, Maureen; daughters, Debra, Jacqueline and Jennifer; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George FLAM; three brothers, David and Arthur of Phoenix and Robert of Peoria. Services at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Interment Beth El Cemetery. 1/13/1976.

FLANAGAN, William Francis
William Francis Flanagan finished his journey home to God on September 24, 2004. Bill was born in Hartford, Connecticut on September 25, 1927, the only son of William Francis Flanagan and Helen Evelyn Finnigan. He is survived by his wife, Tookie, her seven children and grandchildren, and four sisters, twin Bobby Barry of Mystic, Connecticut, Joan Smith of Westport, Connecticut, Helen Walsh of Meriden, Connecticut and Jean Sposato of Pellum, New York. Bill attended and graduated from Pomfret Preparatory in 1945 and went on to graduate from Dartmouth University in 1949. He then received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and his law degree from the University of New York School of Law and was admitted to the New York State Bar Association. He served in the Merchant Marines with a tour of duty in the Antarctic and then enlisted in the Army to serve honorably in the Korean War. He also served his country while working within the Central Intelligence Agency. Bill went on to work for General Electric in both New York City and New Orleans before becoming a consultant for Blandin Paper Company in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where he spent many wonderful years. After retirement Bill spent his winters in Arizona and summers at his home on Pokagama Lake in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He loved deep sea fishing, traveling and hunting. Keeping his grass mowed and manicured was also a passion he had at his home on the lake. Golf was also a special sport for him during his retirement years and his long and avid bridge playing was continued until just before his death. Always a gentleman and loved by many, the world and his family and friends will miss this gentle soul. Services will be private. Joseph Gerald Flander, 58, of Mesa, a sales supervisor, died Jan. 30, 1994. He was born in Milwaukee and was an Army veteran. FLANDERS, Dr. John P.
14 Apr 1907 - 11 Oct 1980 Dr. John P. Flanders, 73, who was on the staff of Arizona State Hosital eight years until retiring in 1978, died Oct. 11, 1980. He practiced medicine 38 years in Monroe, Michigan, before coming here in 1970. He was a member of the deaconate board of the First Congregational Church of Phoenix and a former Shriner in Detroit. He graduated from Albion College in Michigan, received his degree from Loyola University in Chicago and served as a flight surgeon in World War II. Wife, Viva; children, Patricia Payne, Janis Migyanka and Gerald; a brother; and eight grandchildren. 10/14/1980.

FLAVELL, James J.
James J. Flavell passed away unexpectedly on September 18, 2004 in Overgaard, Arizona at his and his soulmate's retirement dream home, with special friends. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio and moved to Arizona in 1962, attended Glendale High School and graduated from the Army & Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1967 retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1995 after 28 years of dedication serving his country. His Navy career included tours in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf as well as the privilege of sharing several country ports with the love of his life. Following retirement, he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service as a city carrier for 9 years and had a special devotion to his customers. He was looking forward to his retirement in the near future. He also received his certificate of Travel Industry Technology at Phoenix College in 2003 and was pursuing his AA degree. A most generous, caring and unselfish person, he is survived by his loving wife, Marie; mother, Mary; 8 children, Kristin, Colleen, James (Deborah), William (Carrie), Patrick (Andrea), Timothy, Dorian (Rossi) and Gillian (Christian), son-in-law, John; 15 beautiful grandchildren; his brothers, Robert (Kate), Charles (Karen), Ed, John (Vicki), Ronald, Donald (Beth); sister, Mary Beth Wells (William); 2 special sister and brother-in-laws, Rene and George and William and Barbara; and especially his greyhound, Lantic. Several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Jim will be dearly missed by all those who loved him. Visitation will be Thursday, September 23rd, from 6 - 8 P. M. with Rosary at 8 P. M. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road. Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 P. M. Friday, September 24th, at SS. FLEMING, Maj. Alec F., Sr.
Maj. Alec F. Fleming, Sr., USAF Ret., 45, died Sat., May 13, 1967, in Oak Park, Illinois, soon after attending the funeral of his father. Major Fleming retired from the Air Force in February 1966 after 24 years of service. At the time of his death he was employed at Luke AFB. A native of Oak Park, he came to Phoenix two years ago from military duty in the Philippines. He also served in Japan and Korea. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 75. Surviving are his wife, Alphine; two sons, Craig FLEMING of Phoenix and Alec F. Second Ave., also had been a timekeeper for a sheetmetal firm in Detroit, Ill. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Phoenix. He was born in Pekin, Ill. FLICKINGER, Cherri Gwynne
20 Jan 1905 - 22 Oct 1979 Sun City - Memorial services for Cherri Gwynne Flickinger, 74, were in the Unity Church, 10101 Coggins Drive, where she was president of the Women of Unity. Mrs. Flickinger, 10137 Bolivar Drive, died Oct. 22, 1979, in her home. She moved here in 1971 from St. Louis, Missouri, and had been a volunteer at Sun Valley Lodge. Her brother survives. John J. Flynn, 55, of Gilbert, a Phoenix attorney who became widely known for his success in defending persons charged with serious crimes, died Jan. 26, 1980, in Flagstaff. He gained national attention in 1966 when he successfully argued the landmark Miranda case before the U.S.Supreme Court where it was ruled that a person charged with crimes had a right to remain silent and to seek counsel. Services for John Forrest, 81, who was chief of the financial and business news department for The New York Times from 1952 to 1963, were in the Scottsdale United Presbyterian Church. Forrest, a Scottsdale resident, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1982, in a Valley hospital. He was born in Scotland and was brought to the United States in 1905. In 1926, he joined The New York Times as a radio news reporter. He was appointed financial news editor in 1945. He studied engineering at night at Columbia University. He moved to Tucson in 1963 where he wrote a stock market column for the Arizona Territorial Newspaper for many years. He then moved to Scottsdale. Services for the Rev. J. T. Fortner, 96, will be today in A.L.Moore & Sons mortuary. Mr. Fortner died Thursday, Sept. 28, 1967, in Desert Terrace Nursing Home. He became a Methodist minister in 1900 and from 1905 to 1940 was a pastor in the Church of God. He spent most of his career at churches in the Effingham, Illinois, area. Gordon W. Foss, age 91, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died September 26, 2004 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He lived in the Kivel Care Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Gordon was born April 12, 1913, in Beldenville, Wisconsin, to William and Nina Foss. Gordon had been a school teacher and school principal prior to working as a salesman for Swift. In February of 1941 he began his career with Hormel Foods as a salesman. He retired from Hormel Foods in Austin as a credit manager in January of 1976. Gordon proudly served his country in World War II as a member of the Army of the United States of America. He was honorably discharged after receiving the European Theater ribbon with one battle star, the American Theater ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. Survivors include his wife Elaine, who also suffers from Alzheimer's Disease in Phoenix, Arizona; three daughters, Patti (Scott) Sutherland of Cave Creek, Arizona; Janet (Pat) Trammell of Sandpoint, Idaho; Judith Shoun of San Jose, California; son, Frederic (Belinda) Foss of Falls Church, Virginia; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was a member and Past Matron of the Greenwood Chapter #59 Order of the Eastern Star and received her fifty-year membership pin. She was also Past President of the Bowling Green Woman's Club, Past Secretary of the Lady Elks #818, and Past Secretary of the National Secretaries Association. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bowling Green, Ohio. She married Gilbert R. Foster of Pemberville, Ohio, owner of the Lincoln-Mercury and American Motors Automobile Dealerships in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death in 1985. Surviving is a daughter, Dr. M. Sun City - Homer Fowler, 77, of 10420 Roundelay Circle, died Sunday, June 23, 1974, in Valley View Community Hospital. He was a retired civil engineer for the Bureau of Public Roads in Bismark, N.D. Retired farmer James Everett Fowler, 72, who came here in 1963 from Riverside, Calif., died yesterday (12/15/1970) in Northwest Hospital, Glendale. Mr. Fowler, 7634 W. Mitchell Drive, was a member of the Methodist Church, a Masonic Lodge and Consistory in Brooklyn, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Julia; a son, Grant of Springfield, Illinois; a daughter, Mrs. Norma Boyler of Fort Madison, Iowa, and two grandchildren. Services and burial will be in Industry, Illinois, Maryvale Mortuary announced. Published Wednesday, 12/16/1970.

FOX, Glen A.
Glendale -- Services for Glen A. Fox, 30, a truck driver for Arizona Sand and Rock Co., will be Thursday in Lundberg Chapel of Chimes, 5852 W. Glenn Dr. Mr. Fox, 6162 NW Grand was fatally injured in an auto accident Sunday, April 30, 1967, at Northern and Grand. Born in McRae, Arkansas, he came here a year ago from Grand Forks, N. D. He had resided in Arizona previously and had served in the Navy from 1956 to 1963. He was a member of the Black Canyon Saddle Club. Survivors include his wife, Marian; a daughter, Vicki of Glendale; his stepmother, Mrs. Viola Fox of Detroit; a brother, J. E. Fox of Phoenix; a step-brother, Emmett Stolz of Glendale; five other brothers and two sisters, all out of state. Burial in Resthaven Cemetery. The Arizona Republic Tuesday, May 3, 1967.
