Douglas "Doug" Arner was a professor emeritus of philosophy who
retired from ASU in June 1987 after 28 years of service to the university. Dr.
Arner earned his master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at the University
of Michigan, and he taught at the University of Michigan and Princeton
University before joining ASU's Department of Psychology and Philosophy in 1959
as an associate professor. He helped establish the current Department of
Philosophy. Dr. Arner was promoted to full professor in 1964 and served as
department chair from 1969-1972. In 1969, Professor Arner presented a colloquium
titled "Philosophy, Science and Man" at numerous college campuses in California.
It was reported that "he believed that, in times to come, mankind may not be
afflicted with so much violence and deceit." He said that "perhaps it is not
folly to look forward to a time when differences among men can be resolved
peaceably." Arner was respected and liked by colleagues and students. He guided
the department through the difficult days of the Vietnam War, vigorously
defending the rights of faculty and students to express their views while also
striving to maintain the integrity of the education the department delivered.
Barbara COLBY, who served as a teaching assistant for Arner in the 1970s,
remembers him as being "the personification of a scholar and a gentleman. His
dedication to the themes of justice and fairness expressed in his clear and
eloquent phrases caught the attention of students at a time when students were
more apt to be interested in campus life than in studying philosophy." Dr. Arner
died in August 7, 2006, from complications following a stroke. He was living at
Blue Jay, California, and was 79 at the time of his death. Doug was survived by

ARNHOLD, Dean J.
Dean J. Arnhold passed away suddenly on
September 4, 2004 at the age of 41. He was born on April 28, 1963 in
Springfield, Massachusetts and moved to Scottsdale nine years ago. He was a
fun-loving son, brother and friend. His easygoing nature, sense of humor, quick
wit and ever-present smile brought him the love of many friends from all over
the country. Every friendship Dean forged was lifelong; every relationship
meaningful. He was a gifted athlete, excelling at skiing, baseball and hockey.
Golf was his true passion, however, and he played every chance he could get. He
was the envy of his golfing partners due to his ability to maintain a 3 handicap
without the benefit of practice or a single lesson. But the prime aspect of his
golf game was the joy he brought to every round. Whether paired with buddies or
newly met "serious" golfers, his infectious sense of humor would have everyone
rolling with laughter by the third hole. He was an avid fan of all sports, a
loyal supporter of the N. Y. Yankees and Giants, and recently, the Diamondbacks.
Dean is survived and will be greatly missed by his soulmate Kimberly Whitten,
their beloved dog, Nikki, his mother, Helen Arnhold, all of Scottsdale, his
brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Diane Arnhold of Winter Garden, Florida,
his sister and brother-in-law, Edward and Lynn Ballinger of Scottsdale, his
sister, Lisa Arnhold also of Scottsdale, his aunt, Kathleen Fleming, his uncles,

friends. A celebration of Dean's life will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004 at
