Maricopa County was created in February 1871 from portions of Pima and Yavapai
Counties. Maricopa was named after the Maricopa people. It was the fifth county
formed in Arizona. More than half of the state’s population resides in Maricopa
County.
Phoenix is the county seat. In 1889, Phoenix was named the
Territorial Capital of Arizona and is the state’s major center of political and
economic activity.
Five Indian reservations are located in the county:
the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Gila River Indian Community,
a portion of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, a portion of the Tohono O'odham
Indian, and Ak Chin.
