WIEGMAN, Mildred H.
14 May 1900 - 3 Nov 1979 Tempe - Services for Mildred Helena Wiegman, 79, of 2340 E. University, will be today at Tempe Mortuary, 405 E. Southern. She died Nov. 3, 1979, in Mesa Lutheran Hospital. She moved here a year ago from Berwyn, Ill., where she was a member of Burlington Railroad Veterans Ladies Auxiliary. WIER, Daniel M.
Daniel M. Wier, 73, a civil engineer who came to Phoenix in 1925 and was known as the dean of land surveyors, suffered a heart attack and died Oct. 29, 1979, while at work as district engineer for Cartwright School District. Mr. Wier was responsible for the surveying for the F.N. Holmquist Engineering Co. from the 1930s until 1959 and for the past 20 years was owner-operator of Allied Surveying & Mapping Co. and Wier Engineering Co. He began his career in the Valley with the U. S. General Land Office as cadastral surveyor. He conducted more than 10,000 property surveys and designed numerous street, playground, drainage and irrigation facilities. He was a 32nd degree Mason with Arizona Lodge 2, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. Mr. Wier came here from Atlanta and is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Robin Michael, Anthony and Kelly; six grandchildren; three sisters and five brothers. Services were in A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary. 10/31/1979.

WIGGAINS, Sonia P.
Sonia P. Wiggains, 53, who lived in Phoenix eight years, died Tues., Aug. 1, 1967, in a local hospital. Mrs. Wiggains, 8641 N. 8th St., was born in Dombey, OK. Husband, Ernest; a son, Gilbert of Eureka, NV; sister, Mrs. Priscilla BETHEL of Phoenix; mother, Mrs. Dollie SHERRILL of Liberal, KS; and two sisters out of state. Margery Irene Wiggs, 71, a former beauty shop owner who retired in 1970, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1982, in a Valley hospital. Services for Mrs. Wiggs, 2720 W. Highland, were in Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Ave. She was born in Ossian, Indiana, and moved to Phoenix 34 years ago. Survivors include her husband, Earl, and a sister. WIGHT, Alice G.
14 Jan 1894 - 4 Oct 1980 Alice G. Wight, 86, who came to Arizona in 1960 from New York, died Oct. 4, 1980, in a local hospital. Mrs. Wight was a past member of Eastern Star and past president of American Legion Auxiliary, Hudson, N.Y. She was born in Meredith, N.H. Surviving are a daughter, Gertrude Flick, and three grandsons. Services were at the Central United Methodist Church, 1875 N. Central. 6 October 1980.

WIGHT, Muriel Pearl
Nov. 2, 1939 ~ Oct. 26, 2008 Anchorage resident Muriel Pearl Wight, 68, died Oct. 26, 2008, at home while surrounded by her family. A praise service was Sunday at University Baptist Church, 4313 Wright St. Muriel was born Nov. 2, 1939, in Quick City, Mo., to Henrietta M. Clark and Donald K. Hixon. She graduated from Yuma Union High School in Yuma, Ariz., in 1957. Muriel attended Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Ariz., and received a bachelor of science degree in 1961. She earned a master's degree in education from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1985. Muriel was introduced to her husband, Richard, while she was in college (he was in the Navy). They were married in 1961. Their daughter, Debbie, was born in 1962 in Grand Junction, Colo. Their son, Steven, was born in 1967 in Moab, Utah. The family moved to Sitka in 1969 and to Anchorage in 1971. Muriel taught math at East Anchorage High School for 20 years, retiring in 1994. She and Richard were active with their church family at University Baptist Church. They traveled many times for missionary works and became very fond of their friends at the Baptist mission in Vladivostok, Russia. "Muriel was a wonderful woman, whose kindness and thoughtfulness made a lasting impression every day on those around her," her family wrote. "She will be greatly missed." She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter and son-in-law, Debbi and Geff Travis of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Connie Wight of Peters Creek; and grandchildren, Dana Travis of Wasilla and Greg Travis of Anchorage. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sister. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Russian Baptist Mission Program through University Baptist Church in Anchorage. WIGLE, Harold R.
6 July 1893 - 27 October 1982 Mesa - Harold R. Wigle, 89, a 24-year Arizona resident, died Oct. 27, 1982, at his east Mesa residence. Mr. Wigle was born in Canada and moved to Arizona from Michigan. He was a retired watchman for the Chrysler Corp. and he served in the Army during World War I. He was a member of VFW Walter Bruce Post, Jefferson Masonic Lodge, and the Jefferson Low 12 Club of the Masonic Lodge. He also was a member of the Masonic Chrysler Airflow Square Club, Knights of Pythias Olympic Lodge, Dreamland Villa Square Club and Velda Rose United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Maude; daughter, Eloise Thoeeren; a sister and two grandchildren. Gibbons-Bunker Desert View Chapel arranged private services. 10/30/1982.

WILCOX, Gale Bowers
Gale B. Wilcox, 73, who was born in Phoenix and owned the La Pasita Mobile Home Park in Casa Grande until retiring in 1967, died Oct. 31, 1979, in St. Luke's Hospital. Mr. Wilcox was raised in Winkelman and lived in Ray, Casa Grande and Sedona before returning to Phoenix in 1973. He once was the youngest grand master of the Arizona Masonic Lodge. WILEY, Wanda L.
Wanda L. Wiley, Born June 13, 1931 at Barberton, Ohio to James E. Montgomery and Edith Davis Montgomery, died Sunday, September 5, 2004 in Tucson, AZ after a long illness. Survived by Thomas P. Wiley her husband of 52 years, sons Richard D. Wiley (Tiffany) also of Tucson and Stephen T. Wiley of Savannah, GA. Son David Michael Wiley preceded her in death in 1988. She is also survived by her brother, James E. Montgomery, Canton, Ohio. Wanda grew up in Greensburg, Ohio and graduated from Greensburg High School. She and Tom met while working in an office in Akron, Ohio. They married August 10, 1952 and moved to Ada, Ohio where Tom finished school work and Wanda worked at the college. After college, they settled in North Canton, Ohio where they later operated Wiley's Pharmacy until moving to Arizona in 1973. After the children were older, Wanda worked in the JC Penney, Target and Robinson-May stores in Phoenix. They moved to Tucson in 1993. Wanda was a wonderful wife and mother and a favorite aunt. She had a way with older people, small children and little animals. Neighbors loved her. She was a lover of flowers and birds and enjoyed gardening and exploring every corner of Arizona. Wanda especially loved being with her sons and their friends. She was a Cub Scout Leader for many years. The family wishes to thank the staff of Casa de Ia Luz Hospice. WILKINS, Benjamin Earl
22 Mar 1897 - 25 Mar 1980 Benjamin Earl Wilkins, 83, who retired as a real estate broker in 1962, died March 25, 1980. Mr. Wilkins moved to Arizona in 1939 from Tennessee and was a World War I Army veteran. Survived by children, Martha Ann Mitchell, Sarah Rosser, and James; three grandchildren. WILKINS, Caroline I.
Caroline I. Wilkins, 91, who taught elementary school in Globe, Phoenix and Palo Verde, died Nov. 22, 1982, in Renton, Washington. Mrs. Wilkins was born in Circleville, Illinois, and moved to Arizona 62 years ago. She attended high school and college in Illinois and graduated from Arizona State University with a teaching certificate. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association. Ernest Wilkins, 88, a rancher in Nutrioso and the White Mountains until coming to Mesa in 1951, died Friday, June 21, 1974, in Mesa Lutheran Hospital. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern states and among the Zuni and Hopi Indians of Arizona. Wife, Myrtle; a son, Glen; daughters, Mrs. Melba Hubbard and Mrs. Vera Jarvis; foster sons, Thomas W. Wilkins and R. Ray Wilkins; stepsons, Aaron F., Mark B. and Sterling W. Sun City - Freeman R. Wilkins, 77, a retired supervisor with General Motors Corp. in Ohio, died Dec. 16, 1982, at Boswell Hospital. He was born in Canterbury, New Brunswick, and moved to Sun City from Parma, OHio, in 1968. He was a member of the United Church of Sun City, Sun City Golf Club and the Masonic Lodge in Parma, OH. WILKINSON, Ann Elizabeth
Ann Elizabeth Read Wilkinson, a long time Valley resident, passed away on September 16, 2004. She was born on August 4, 1930 in Jackson Mississippi, the only daughter of Etma Inez Malloy and George Leslie Read. Ann graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's college located in Virginia in 1951 with a degree in English and a minor in Art where she later taught high school English. She married Leon Irvine Wilkinson, who passed away in 1982, on January 26, 1952 at Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA. Ann and Leon moved from Fayetteville, New York to Paradise Valley, Arizona in 1968, where Leon worked at General Electric, Honeywell and Intel. Ann is survived by her son, Richard Read Wilkinson, daughter-in-law, Nancy and two granddaughters, Madeleine and Natalie. She is also remembered by other family members, Lillian and William Elder, Richard and Bonnie Wilkinson and numerous nieces and nephews. Ann will be missed dearly by her caregivers Gladys and Nora and her dear friends Jim and Lucy. Services will be held at Saint Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church on Friday, September 24 at 1:00 p. m. located at 6715 N. Mockingbird Lane, Paradise Valley, Arizona. 23 March 1930 - 23 Dec 1982 Paradise Valley - Leon I. Wilkinson, 52, manager of engineering with Intel Corp., died Dec. 23, 1982, at his Paradise Valley residence. He was born in West Virginia and moved to Arizona from Syracuse, New York, 14 years ago. He received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland, Master's Degree from the University of Connecticut and Doctorate from Syracuse University, all related to electrical engineering. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and Sigma Xi Fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Richard R.; mother, Lillian; a sister and a brother. Lotus Marguerite Wilkinson, 80, who had been a Red Cross field director during World War II, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1982, in a Valley hospital. She was a native of Iowa and moved to Arizona 12 years ago from Colorado. She was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Votes and Common Cause. Mrs. Williams was a native of St. Louis and moved to Arizona from Chicago. She was a volunteer for Scottsdale Girls Club and St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church. She was a member of Paradise Valley Country Club, a former member of Lincoln Park Zoo Board in Chicago, and was active in the Women's Athletic Club. She was a Red Cross volunteer in New York during World War II. She is survived by her husband, R. Arthur; sons, Donald, Robert and Lucien; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also active in the Republican Women's Club of Douglas and the Daughters of the American Republic of Texas. She was a regent in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was director of the board of the Arizona Children's Home. Hayden -- Services for Ernest F. Williams, 60, who died Monday, May 1, 1967, in Tucson Medical Center, were at Griffith Mortuary in Winkelman. He was a member of the Hayden Winkelman Chamber of Commerce and past noble grand of Gila Valley Lodge 19 of the Odd Fellows. He is survived by his wife, Ilene; a daughter, Margaret Joyce Williams of Flagstaff; two sons, Ernest, Jr. of Tucson and Thomas Allen of Kearny; one step-daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Steininger of Hayden; two stepsons, Willard Lamphere of Kearny; and Larry Lamphere of Flagstaff; two sisters and two brothers out of state; and two grandchildren. WILLIAMS, Robert Lloyd
Robert Lloyd Williams, 86, died Monday October 3, 2005 in Tempe. He was born in Tempe on August 14, 1919, the youngest of seven children, to Josiah and Alice Kathryn (Holmsley) Williams. He graduated from Tempe High School and attended Arizona Teachers College (now Arizona State University) studying architectural drawing and engineering. Lloyd married Genevieve Adams, his soul mate, on September 25, 1940. He worked briefly for mining company in Globe, AZ and then as a draftsman. He then worked as a clerk for the Salt River Power Co. before being drafted into the service in World War II. After a medical discharge Lloyd began what was to be a long and successful career as a building contractor. He formed 'Williams & Wells' which eventually became 'Williams & Sons' and built homes, apartments, churches and office complexes. He served for several years on the Tempe Zoning Board and over saw the early development of Tempe. Lloyd was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served very faithfully for many years. He and Genevieve were sealed for time and all eternity in 1957. He is pre-deceased by one son Randy Gail and his beloved wife Genevieve who died June 28, 2005. He is survived by two sons Ted and Robert Lloyd of Tempe; a daughter Janny Cardwell of Tempe and a daughter Barbara Horrocks of Woodland Hills, Utah. He had 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grand-children. Lloyd was cherished by his family for his wisdom and guidance throughout their lives. He will be greatly missed. Mesa - Roy Arthur Williams, 75, a retired insurance salesman and farmer, died Dec. 23, 1982, in Yuma. Mr. Williams was born in Safford. He lived in Mesa for several years before moving to Yuma. He served in the Arizona House of Representatives from Maricopa County in 1941 and 1942. Mr. Williams was a graduate of mesa Union High School, was a high priest with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Yuma Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Lola; daughter, Shirley M. Riley; sons, Lawrence A., Roy A. and Oscar G.; a sister, two brothers; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. WILLIAMS, William H.
Tucson -- Proper medical treatment for bronchial pneumonia would have saved the life of an American who was held in a Nogales, Mexico, jail, a Pima County pathologist said Thursday. Dr. Louis B. Hirsch, who watched the autopsy of William H. Williams last month said the death could have been treated. Williams, 28, was awaiting trial on drug charges and died in his cell January 23, 1976. Hirsch said he probably contracted pneumonia when he spent a cold night in an abandoned car outside the jail after an escape attempt. 13 Feb 1976

She was a native of Germany, but she had lived in Arizona 50 years, 30 of which were spent in the Phoenix area. The family ranch in this area was at the site of the present Sky Harbor Airport. Mrs. Williamson was the last of 12 sisters in the family. She is survived by three nieces and one nephew, all in California. 30 January 1960.

Debra Ruth Wilmarth, 51, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family and friends on August 25, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. WILSON, Arthur
Peoria -- Arthur Wilson, 79, of 11411 N. 91st Ave., died Thursday, January 8, 1976, in Boswell Hospital. He retired after 40 years with the National Police Traffic Safety Institute and had introduced and promoted driver training and traffic safety programs nationwide in high schools and was a member of a number of state and national law enforcement associations. WILSON, Beulah C.
30 Sep 1892 - 26 Jan 1980 Beulah C. Wilson, 82, widow of Ray W. Wilson, former Phoenix city manager, died Jan. 26, 1980, in St. Joseph Hospital. Mrs. Wilson came to Phoenix 30 years ago from Kansas City, MO. She served as a sergeant in the Women's Army Corps and earned three decorations for distinguished service during World War II. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, PEO Sisterhood and Encanto Golf Association. Her husband, who died in 1976, was the firt city manager appointed under the charter reform movement. His 11 years was the longest term in Phoenix history. WILSON, Florence Ann
Florence Ann Wilson, 85, died on September 3rd, after a full roller coaster ride life. She and her husband Harry raised three sons, Wayne, Jim and Joe in Arizona after moving to Phoenix in 1957. Florence, along with a group of mothers of severely handicapped young adults, helped change the attitude and atmosphere surrounding the handicapped in the Phoenix area. Florence and the whole family will be eternally grateful for the loving, caring family at Gompers Center in Phoenix and all of her friends at St. Thomas Parish. Her daughters-in-law, Judy and Joey, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren will have many wonderful memories of Grandma and Grandpa Wilson. Francis Daniel "Doc" Wilson, D. P. M., 83, passed away September 12, 2004. He was a retired Podiatrist having practiced in California. He was born June 27, 1921 in New Brighton, PA the youngest of 5 children. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. He graduated from Rochester H. S., Rochester, PA. He served during WW II in the Army Medical Corp in both the states and in Europe. Upon return, he entered Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, earning his medical degree in 1950. Dr. Wilson did his residency at the California Podiatric Hospital in San Francisco and completed his pre-ceptership, DPM in Inglewood, CA. He began his first practice in Richmond, CA in 1952. In 1989 he married Naomi Angell in St. Johns Catholic Church in El Cerrito, CA. Upon retirement the Wilsons moved to Arizona residing in Westbrook Village in Peoria and later Sun City. He is survived by his wife Naomi; 3 children from a previous marriage, Kathy Wilson Doak of CA, David Wilson of CA, James Wilson (Sherrie) of AZ. Grandsons Nicholas Ahlstrom, Daniel & Michael Wilson. Great granddaughter Nicki Ahlstrom. Stepson Brian Angell of CO; step-daughter Claire Angell Swanger of CA. 2 step-granddaughters; 4 step-grandsons and 1 step great granddaughter. 28 July 1895 - 23 October 1982. Gertrude Phelps Wilson, 87, a native of Mesa, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1982, in Brigham City, Utah. Services for Mrs. Wilson were in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She graduated from Tempe Normal School (now Arizona State University) with a degree in education. WILSON, Glenwood M.
Glenwood M. Wilson of Phoenix, Arizona, quietly passed away Saturday afternoon, September 11, 2004 at the age of 76. He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the youngest of three children of Elwood and Pauline Wilson. He obtained his BA in political science from OU, and his MPA from Wayne State University in Michigan. He made one of his best decisions when he married Margaret E. Wilson in 1952. Glenwood retired in 1990 after a 37-year career in public administration. He spent four years as city manager of Chandler, Arizona, and five years as city manager of Corona, California, but considered the high points in his career to be his work in the City of Phoenix. As Urban Service Manager, he developed Public Housing into a departmental operation, developed Phoenix's first federally funded Urban Renewal Project, the Neighborhood Development Project, and initiated other social service operations through the LEAP Department and its successor, the Human Resource Department. One of his proudest achievements was in 1980 when the US. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded him a fellowship to attend a summer program at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He oversaw the work of Phoenix's Substance Abuse Commission and its Excellence in Education Commission, and served on the Urban Consortium Taskforce on Community and Economic Development. He was a member of various professional organizations, including the Arizona City/County Management Association, which he twice served as president. As important to him as his career, was his faith and work in his church and his time with his family. He was one of the founding members of Shadow Rock United Church of Christ of Phoenix, in which he served one term as president of the congregation. He also spear-headed the development of the Festival Garden at Shadow Rock where he will be laid to rest. Glenwood is survived by his wife, Margaret, his children, Cynthia Y. Wilson of Gilbert, AZ, Dr. Glen Y. Wilson (Takako) of Mansfield Center, Conn., and his beloved grandchildren, Daniel and Christopher. Service will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, September 16, at Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, 12861 North 8th Avenue (just south of Thunderbird), Phoenix. WILSON, Mary Carmon
Mary Carmon Wilson, 56, director of nurses since 1957 for the Maricopa County Health Department, died of cancer August 29, 1967, in her home, 140 W. Elwood. In 1953 Miss Wilson was given Maricopa County's employ honor award by the Board of Supervisors for outstanding service. She joined the department in 1948 as a staff nurse and became supervising nurse in 1951. Miss Wilson was a member of the health advisory board of the Phoenix Community Council, a consultant for the Visiting Nurse Service, member of American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, American Public Health Association and Temple Beth Israel. She was graduated from the school of nursing at Henrotin Hospital in Chicago, got her degree in public health nursing at Loyola University in Chicago and received her masters in public health at the University of Michigan. Miss Wilson, a native of Morris, Illinois, is survived by her mother, Mrs. Marletta Wilson of Phoenix. Cremation has taken place, A.L.Moore and Sons Mortuary announced. WINGFIELD, Howard B.
Camp Verde - Howard B. Wingfield, 70, died Wed., July 3, 1974, in Marcus Lawrence Hospital, Cottonwood. He was born in Camp Verde and managed the Wingfield Commercial Co. store, which was founded by his grandfather in 1911. The store was an outgrowth of the old Fort Verde sutler's store, a privately operated post exchange for the army cavalry troops stationed here during the Indian wars. Hazel Dunbar Winne, 102, died Monday, Sept. 6. Hazel Dunbar, born March 5, 1902 in Chicago, married Robert Winne and they raised their family in Elmhurst, Il. They moved to Phoenix in 1970. Robert died in 1990. Hazel enjoyed about 11 years in Glencroft Retirement Village in Glendale, AZ. After her 100th birthday she moved to Danville, VT to make her home with daughter Grace and Robert Hallas. She also leaves other children - Rev. Robert and Doris Winne of Wauchula, FL, Dr. Wendell and Betty Obetz of Rochester, MN, and Rev. James and Hazel Clark of Sebring, Fl., plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren. WINSLOW, Thelma Esther
Thelma Esther Ward Winslow, Born October 28, 1912, in Long Beach, Calif. Deceased, September 5, 2004. She was brought with her two older brothers to Casa Grande, AZ in January, 1913 when her parents, Homer and Minnie Ward came to claim homestead rights in the new State of Arizona. Moving into the town a year later, she and her 5 brothers attended Casa Grande schools where Thelma became Valedictorian of her high school class of 1930. She worked for the Casa Grande Dispatch while attending high school and upon graduation was employed by the Arizona Edison Company. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Casa Grande, she served as Sunday School teacher, choir member and church pianist. She married the late Fred D. Winslow in 1933 and moved to Phoenix where she became active in the Historic First Presbyterian Church, holding several offices in the Women's Association, a 50 year member of the Chancel Choir, a bell ringer and soloist, member of a women's trio and for 25 years served as receptionist, secretary, financial secretary, pastor's secretary and for the last 15 years, before retirement in 1978, as Administrative Assistant to the Pastors. After one month of retirement she acted as secretary at the Phoenix office of the Synod of the Southwest for 5 years. Thelma was an early member of the Phoenix Women's Club choral group; volunteer worker at Community Information and Referral Service as well as pianist for Handicappers Outreach for Christ. Survivors include her daughter Barbara (Dr. Matthew) Levario and son, Paul D. Winslow, 6 grandchildren, Mark (Cynthia) Levario, Craig (Sharon) Levario, Andrea (Dimitrios Douros) Levario, Tiffany (Steven) Tokos, Jennifer (Bill) Sheridan, and Kirk (Emily) Winslow; 11 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother Warren (Louise) Ward of California and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Historic First Presbyterian Church, 402 W. Grover Cleveland Winton, 82, was born in Hillsboro, Tennessee, and died Sun., July 30, 1967, in Phoenix General Hospital. Mr. Winton moved to Arizona 42 years ago from Moberly, MO, and owned and operated the G.C. Winton Construction Co. from 1925 to 1964 when he retired. He served three terms as trustee of Montezuma Masonic Lodge No. 35 and was voted a life member of that organization in 1959. He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1963. Claudia Lee Wiselus, 52, born November 14, 1951, passed away September 1, 2004. Beloved daughter of Howard and Patricia Ruby, and sister to Paul and his wife Jennifer Ruby. She is survived by 2 adoring sons, Justin Wise-lus of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Joshua Wise-lus of Flagstaff, Arizona, 2 nieces, Taylor and Madison Ruby, 3 aunts and numerous cousins. Claudia received her L. P. N. license 25 years ago. She suspended her nursing career to raise a family. After moving back to Phoenix from Flagstaff she was employed by a Cellular Phone Company for 10 years. She decided to renew her L. P. N. license and returned to school in 2002. Her beautiful smile and gentle touch were greatly appreciated by her nursing home patients. 20 June 1909 - 3 Oct 1980 Glendale - Elbert L. Wiseman, 71, who had been a machinist for a tractor company before retiring here in 1968 from Iowa, died Oct. 3, 1980, in Boswell Hospital. He was awarded the Bronze Star while serving with the Army in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; children, Alberta Sawyers, Betty Landcaster, John, Eldon and Alvin; stepchildren, Sue Brown, Walter, Jim and Norman Zahn, Frank, Sonny and Howard Peterson; 23 grandchildren. WISEMAN, Fred P.
Casa Grande -- Services for Fred P. Wiseman, 82, who died Sunday, Aug. 13, 1967, as a result of injuries suffered when he was struck by a train, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Casa Grande Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Graveside services will be conducted at Mountain View Cemetery by the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Wiseman was born in Manning, Iowa, and came to Arizona 31 years ago. Steve Wisniewski, 68, a past commander of Disabled American Veterans Posts in Glendale and Phoenix, died Wed., May 3, 1967, in Phoenix VA Hospital. He was a retired butcher who came here in 1958 from his native Chicago. He also was a senior vice commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8015 and an Army veteran of World War I. WIST, Burton Eugene
Burton Eugene Wist was born on September 9, 1922 to Lawrence and Ann Wist in Webster, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Saint Johns Lutheran Church in Webster. He spent his childhood years there and graduated from Webster High School. While attending school, Burton worked along side his father at Wist Produce Company. On September 22, 1942 he entered into the United States Navy where he proudly served his country for almost four years, being honorably discharged as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class USNR on March 2, 1946. Upon his return to Webster, from the service, he opened and was co-owner of Wist Refrigerated Lockers and Webster Bottling Company. In 1958 Burton moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he became a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He acquired SEC, Insurance and Real Estate Licenses along with a new home for himself and his parents. In 1963 he opened Wist Realty and continued on in real estate with Tom Fannin Realty until he retired in 1972. Burton became a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Phoenix, AZ in 1981 and continued on with his membership there until his passing. Burton was a member of The Sons Of Norway and the American Legion in Webster, South Dakota. He enjoyed music, sailing, camping, world travel and spending time with his family and friends. Burton passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Phoenix, AZ at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 23 days. Survivors include his cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert. There will be a funeral service on Friday, September 10, at 10:00 A. WITZEMAN, Louis A.
Louis A. Witzeman, Jr., November 23, 1924 - September 2, 2004, husband, father, grandfather, friend and Rural/Metro Corporation's founder and chairman emeritus, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2004, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 79. Born on November 23, 1924 in Akron, Ohio, Mr. Witzeman was the son of Louis A. Witzeman and Bertha Evangeline Rowe Witzeman. He attended high school at University School-Shaker Heights in Ohio. He graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree in journalism. Soon after, he moved to Phoenix to work as a reporter for the "Arizona Times" newspaper. Mr. Witzeman's career turned from journalism to public safety in 1948, after he witnessed a neighbors' home burn to the ground. His idea to launch a fire department funded by subscriptions took wings on February 2, 1948, when he opened the doors of Rural/Metro Fire Department with one fire engine and four firefighters. His practical and innovative approach to the business earned him success and recognition for decades to come. Since its founding, Rural/Metro has grown to become a leading national provider of medical transportation and fire protection services. Today, the Company's 9,000 employees serve more than 400 communities in 23 states. Mr. Witzeman, who retired from Rural/Metro in 1981, served on the Company's Board of Directors until his passing. In 2000, Mr. Witzeman was named among the century's Top 20 most influential leaders in the U. S. fire industry by "Fire Chief" magazine. In 2001, he was inducted into the Arizona Fire Marshal's Hall of Fame. In his final letter to the citizens of Scottsdale, Arizona, contained in the 2004 Rural/Metro Fire Department Annual Activities Report, Mr. Witzeman reflected on the transition of a municipal fire department: "Changing times have now brought us to the point we will not have the contractual relationship we have had over these years much longer. This is a sad moment for us as it is for many of the citizens and leaders of Scottsdale's government. We must share the bittersweet memories of five decades together as we each advance along our separate roads. We want to say to you to whom this report is addressed and to the citizens of Scottsdale that it has been a wonderful experience for us. Together we have successfully built an innovative, cost-effective fire service dedicated to saving lives and property and known through much of the world. We have truly shared a grand experience. " In more than a half century of service to the U. S. fire industry, Mr. Witzeman devoted himself to a wide variety of fire-related organizations, committees and associations.
