SHALLMAN, William Irving
William Irving Shallman died in his
sleep July 19, 2004 at the age of 78. Bill was a good man, a fine husband and
father, served his country well in the Second World War, and was known to many
as a stalwart friend. He will be sorely missed. Those of us who are left behind
take solace in knowing that Bill and Nancy are together again. Bill was born in
Upper Peninsula Michigan, raised there and in northern Wisconsin, grew up an
athlete, woodsman, and outdoorsman and after the war attended and graduated from
Marquette. There he met and married Nancy. They were together over fifty years
until her death. First in Green Bay and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, then later in Taos,
New Mexico and finally in Flagstaff, Arizona, Bill and Nancy worked and raised
their two sons, Richard and James. Later, retirement in Lake Montezuma with
summer visits to Idaho with friends and visits to family occupied Bill's time,
in between golf tournaments and friendly card games. Bill was preceded in death
by his wife Nancy, and is survived by his sons Richard and James, their wives
Margaret and Carol, and their children, his grandchildren, Erik, Christopher,
Molly, and Lindsay who all live in the Pacific Northwest. Bill is also survived
by his dear friend Marie, with whom we share the pain of his passing. Neither
Bill nor Nancy wished formal services, but the family is planning a private
memorial in the near future. Please remember Bill as you knew him, honor his
memory by enjoying your life and those who are close to you, and when you get a
chance, take a stance - he always did. Published in the Arizona Republic on

SHAW, Mabel
Mrs. Mabel 'Ruth' Shaw, it is with great
sorrow that we acknowledge the death of Ruth Shaw, loving wife and mother, and
an active member of the Coolidge community on September 19, 2004. Mabel Ruth
Withers was born in Kinsale, Virginia on January 1, 1924, to long time Virginia
residents Warren and Ruth Withers. She attended Cople High School in
Westmoreland County and was voted best athlete for her pitching skills on the
school softball team. After high school Ruth attended the Strayers Business
College and began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and taking
classes at Georgetown University while living with her sister, Sis, in D. C.
Ruth met her husband, Taylor Shaw, while he was stationed at Langley Air Force
Base on leave from the European Theater during World War II. They became engaged
and were married in Reno, Nevada on June 15, 1945, a day after Taylor came back
from a tour of the Pacific Theater. They came to Coolidge in June of 1945 to
begin a life together. Both Ruth and Taylor found jobs scarce in those first
years in Coolidge. Ruth worked at the German Prisoner of War camp in Florence,
and later worked as a bookkeeper for Fred Slater's Auto. Taylor worked at the
O'Malleys lumber yard. During this time, the couple built their home on Kennedy
street brick by brick on their off hours. Eventually Taylor joined with his
brother, Curtis, and went to flooring and upholstery school in California.
During that time in California, their first son, Craig, was born. Upon the
Shaw's return to Coolidge, the family business, Shaw's Interiors was launched.
Their youngest son, Steven, was born shortly after. Ruth worked for many years
doing the bookkeeping and working as an interior designer helping customers pick
out fabrics and flooring. She and Taylor believed in giving back to the
community and were very active and supportive of the First Christian Church.
Ruth was the volunteer softball coach for the town of Coolidge girls team. She
was also a member of P. E. O., Monday Nighters, and the Chamber of Commerce,
where they were selected man and woman of the year. As active as she was, Ruth
will be remembered best for always leaving her door open for anyone who needed
advise, a caring listener, or just a cup of coffee. Ruth was preceded in death
by her husband, Taylor, and is survived by her sons, Craig and Steven, their
wives, Debbie and Vicky, and her grandchildren, Brittany, Lauren, and Jennifer.

SHORTRIDGE, Ernest Raymond
Ernest
Raymond Shortridge, a third generation Arizonan, passed away September 3, 2004.
Ernie was born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix on January 14, 1937, the
oldest son of Ernest Raymond and Frances Dickson Shortridge and spent his early
childhood in Hayden, Arizona. He attended grade school in Bremerton and Olympia,
Washington and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1955. He was very
active in the Boy Scouts of America at all levels and also excelled on the swim
team while in Olympia, Washington. Ernie worked at White Sands Proving Ground
and Airesearch following high school graduation and married Beverly Taylor in
Phoenix in 1957. Ernie attended Arizona State University from 1957 to 1960,
majoring in Architecture. He also attended classes at the Frank Lloyd Wright
Institute of Architecture. Ernie was always very creative, and began actively
working to obtain patents on new inventions while still in his early twenties.
His ingenious projects ranged from flying saucers, to improved building design
materials, to novel transportation devices. Ernie began his first business,
Western Environmental Service, in 1971 and immediately began developing and
marketing mechanical instruments for measuring air flow in buildings. Shortridge
Instruments, Inc., was incorporated in 1979, and Ernie began designing very
innovative, electronic, digital readout instruments for measuring air flow and
velocity. These instruments very quickly became the standard throughout the
industry. Ernie was blessed with a happy, sunshiny disposition from early
infancy. He was a generous, warmhearted child, who grew into a caring,
compassionate man with an endearing personality, and a delightfully wry sense of
humor. He remained a person of integrity, sensitivity, and true concern for the
welfare of others throughout his life. He possessed a very strong character and
a very strong work ethic, and tried to instill the value of this work ethic in
everyone he encountered. Ernie loved his family, art, architecture, photography
and collecting American Indian art. He was a very talented artist and
photographer. He also had a deep love for babies, puppies and other small
creatures and always found great delight in holding and caring for babies. Ernie
faced Parkinson's Disease with the same remarkable courage, grace and wit with
which he had always faced earlier difficulties. Ernie is preceded in death by
his father Ernest Raymond Shortridge Junior and his uncles, Donald and Harold
Shortridge. Ernie is survived by his mother, Frances Capener, his wife of 47
years, Beverly, their children, Lynne (Ron) Tornell, Randall Shortridge and
Kimberley (Mark) Christopher, their grandchildren, Adrianna, Emily, Kelvin,
Andrew and Kelly, his brother Lewis (Annette) Shortridge and a large extended
family. A Memorial Service will be held at Chaparral Christian Church, 6451 East
Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ on Saturday, September 18th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in Ernie's honor may be made to The National Parkinson
Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave. Bob Hope Road Miami, Florida 33136-1494 or to The
