after a courageous battle with leukemia. Ben leaves behind his wife, Bette in
Ahwatukee, children Vicki Starkovich, Jim Jefferson and Terry Kiernan in

Scarborough, and many nieces and nephews. Ben was a humble man who was loved by
everyone who met him. He always put others' needs before his own, and never
wanted any glory for the many good deeds he's done. Ben served his country
proudly, as a Chief Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy during his nearly 22 year
career. His first duty station was aboard the USS Cimarron, he went on to a
Wespac tour aboard the USS Bennington. He was chosen to serve as the Medical
Officer at the South Pole Expedition, and finished his Navy career in a tour of
duty in Viet Nam, where he was Chief Hospital Corpsman assigned to the 1st
Marine Division, where he received numerous awards and commendations. Ben then
went on to be a business owner, and with Bette, ran Creative Office Systems in
Tempe. For the past ten years, Ben has worked in Congressman J. D. Hayworth's
District Office as the Veteran's and Military Affairs staff member. Ben had many
accomplishment's during his tenure. One of Ben's enduring legacies was his work
to preserve Luke Air Force Base. Ben not only worked with the Fighter Country
Partnership as an active member but he took a lead role in securing
congressional funding which provided the Air Force with $14 million in
additional funds to protect the base from encroachment. Ben also played a key
role in designating the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona and ensuring its
funding and continued growth through Congressional action. Ben was also very
involved with the Navajo Code Talkers and again took the lead in securing $87
million for a veteran's health center on the Navajo Nation. Ben served the
Veteran's of Arizona honorably, whether they needed help with their benefits or
were in need of medical assistance, Ben was always there to protect and help
them. Ben felt honored to have the opportunity to assist constituents and
considered it a great privilege. Ben was a liason to the Carl T. Hayden VA
Medical Center, where he was one of the original organizers of the Veteran's Day
Parade we now celebrate in Phoenix, and continued his involvement until his
