DOWDY,
Glenn Allen
Glenn Allen Dowdy was a kind and "gentle man," loving husband,
fabulous father and wonderful storyteller. He was born in Charlie, Texas on June
21, 1921, but moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1923, so he considered himself an
Arizona native. Glenn loved the Arizona desert and was planning to move back to
Phoenix when he died on August 30, 2004. During WWII, Glenn proudly served his
country in the US Army as a corporal and fought in the Battle of the Bulge where
he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Glenn often fondly recalled his
memories of the War and those he met while in the Army. Glenn also attended
Davidson College in North Carolina while in the Army. After the War ended, Glenn
returned to Phoenix where he worked in various jobs including hotel management,
as a photographer for the Arizona Highway Department and as a pavement salesman
for the Arizona Highway Department selling sidewalks to developing neighborhoods
in Phoenix in the 1950s. It was at this job where he met his wife Cookie who he
was married to for 50 years until her death in 2001. In 1956, Glenn landed a job
in San Diego as Executive Vice President of the Associated General Contractors
of America (AGC) southern California chapter, and moved his family to the beach
at La Jolla. While in San Diego, Glenn also served on the Board of Directors of
the San Diego Stadium, Union Bank and was one of the founders of the San Diego
Wild Animal Park near Escondido. Glenn also served AGC as a lobbyist in
Washington D. C. and came to know and admire President Richard M. Nixon who he
visited many times at the White House and in San Clemente, California. In 1973,
Glenn moved his family to Oklahoma City where, as Executive Director, he ran the
American Institute of Constructors (AIC), an international association for those
in the construction industry. In 1982, Glenn retired from AIC and joined his
daughter Susie at Dowdy & Associates, a public relations and advertising agency.
In 1989, Glenn went to work at UMB Bank, formerly the Oklahoma Stockyards Bank.
Glenn loved his job there because he got to meet so many people everyday. Glenn
loved talking and telling his stories, and his friends and customers loved him
and looked forward to seeing him each day. He seldom missed a day of work at UMB
until he fell in March of this year while at work at age 82 and broke his hip.
Glenn was looking forward to moving back to Phoenix to be near his many high
school friends, but especially his dear friend Betty. Glenn will be cremated and
he will finally get to go home to Phoenix, the state he loved so much. Everyone,
but especially his daughter Susie, will miss him and his stories. Published in
the Arizona Republic on 9/3/2004.
