Bette is survived by two sons and their families; Carl Bowen, his wife Jill and daughter Layni, and Cary Bowen, his wife Amber, daughter Hailey, and son Charles, all of Austin, TX; as well as Charles Lee Bowen, her ex-husband and life-long friend and many other dear friends. Bette had lived and touched lives in many places including Dallas, Austin, Kingsland, and Galveston TX, Las Vegas NV, Richmond VA, and Chandler AZ. Bette was fondly known as a "doer". She was willing to try anything; from Windsurfing on Lake Mead to Tai-Chi (all after the age of 50). She loved to talk about God, gardening, and her cats Thomas and Sally. She had a special fondness for those people on the fringe of society who were discounted or ignored by others. Bette was a devout Christian and very active in the church. She was the model servant - always doing for others and avoiding the spotlight. She was like a battery, providing the spark and energy to jump start everyone she encountered. Through the church, her role as a volunteer in local outreach programs, and her general love for all people, Bette was the light in the lives of many and will be dearly missed. Michelle loved her pets as any mother would love her children. Michelle first moved to Portland in 1988 and it quickly became her home. For 10 years, she tried off and on to make a life for herself in Arizona but always went back to Portland, for the last time in 1998. While living in Portland, Shelly loved to visit and run on the beach at Seaside, play Frisbee with Tango on a bright fall day (or any day, for that matter), and enjoyed camping in the wilderness of Mt. Hood. At the time of her death, Michelle was employed as a waitress at the Hollywood Burger Bar, where she loved her customers almost as much as they loved her. Michelle will be remembered most for her endless energy, her love for reading, animals, nature, Don, and her family. A memorial service will be held in Michelle's honor this Saturday, September 18 at 1pm at Desert Cross Lutheran Church, 8600 S. McClintock in Tempe. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Michelle's memory to the Oregon Humane Society, PO Box 11364, Portland, OR 97211-0364 or online at www. oregonhumane. org.
