BAAB, George Willson
George Willson Baab died Monday, September 13, 2004 in Sun City, Arizona. George was born in Greeley, Colorado, May 28, 1915. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in civil engineering and married Helen Jane Hammond of Loveland, Colorado on May 24, 1940. Helen would be his lifelong, loving companion. With his father Herman, he operated Baab Construction Company for more than 30 years, building bridges and highway segments in Colorado and adjoining states. George interrupted his career to serve with the Corps. of Engineers attached to the National Civil Aeronautics Committee in Gallup, New Mexico and Cape Charles, Virginia during World War II, returning to Greeley at the conclusion of the war and remaining there until his retirement from working life. George and Helen moved to Estes Park, Colorado in 1972, where George was active in the service of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church and civic affairs. In 1991, George and Helen moved to Sun City, Arizona, where they continued to enjoy life with friends who had relocated there from Colorado and with new friends met in church, golf, and service organizations. As a young man, George was an outstanding tennis player, and he remained an avid sports fan throughout his life. He loved fishing, golf, and music; he was particularly adept at working with his hands and tools. His children and their families have been the beneficiaries of a multitude of projects, and he will continue to live in their hearts through the wonderful works he has left behind. George is survived by his wife, Helen, of Sun City, Arizona; his daughter, Linda and husband David Tompkins of Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Bill and Vicki Baab of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren: Scott, Stacey and Amanda Tompklins; Matthew Babb and Leslie Babb Durant; great granddaughter: Kylie Durant; and brother-in-law, Earl Bourque of North Palm Beach, Florida. They will cherish the memory of his gentle, loving spirit and the simple, honest devotion that he gave and taught. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A. M. on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church, 9502 Hutton Drive, Sun City, Arizona, 623-974-8404. Mesa -- Mrs. Elsie Babcock, who had been active in all fields of art and music during the 100 years of her life, died Saturday, August 5, 1967, in Mesa General Hospital. Gravesides services in the Mesa City Cemetery. Mrs. Babcock was born in New York soon after her French mother and Irish father arrived from Europe. Her mother died in childbirth, and Mrs. Babcock was adopted by a Maj. and Mrs. Foard of Texas. She attended Oberlin College in Ohio and moved to Los Angeles in 1909. Whil in Los Angeles, she was a member of the Los Angeles Matinee Music Club and was interested in helping young people to continue their music education. Mrs. Babcock moved to 1040 N. 6th Place, Mesa, seven years ago. She was active in the Mesa Woman's Club. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Sam Juliette Duus of Mesa; two stepsons Harry Hardy of Novato, Calif., and Oliver C. Hardy of Los Angeles; two stepdaughters, Ethelyn Stanton of San Gabriel, Calif., and Mrs. Marian Barryman of Costa Mesa, Calif.; three grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Margaret Ella Palmer Bacon, 100, died Sun., Mar. 8, 1970. She came to Phoenix in 1902 and started teaching a year later in the old Riverside School. She was born January 20, 1870, in Gagetown, New Brunswick, and during the winter of 1902 visited a sister, Mrs. M. H. SHARPE of Phoenix. She met Thomas H. BACON, a member of the Roosevelt School Board and they were married in 1905. He died in 1949. She was a member of the Church Circle at Bethel Methodist Church. BAILY, Ruth Broady
Ruth Broady Baily, 94, was born on the 18th day of June 1910 in Austin, Indiana. Ruth came to Arizona as a child in 1920. She lived on Heard Ranch in South Phoenix where her father was a foreman and, later, the supervisor. She attended and graduated from Roosevelt school in 1923. She graduated Phoenix Union High in 1927. She Graduated from ASTC (later ASU), with a home economics degree in 1932. She married Robert Kenneth Baily on the 16th day of July 1930. Ruth helped Ken operate the Varsity Inn until 1940. She worked for the Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Bureau from 1940-1943. Ruth and Ken moved to South Phoenix after WWII and built a house on Dobbins Road. Ruth took a hiatus from work for a few years after the birth of her son Brian. Starting in 1956, Ruth taught school, the second and the sixth grade at Valley View Elementary School. She also taught the sixth grade and was a librarian at the Roosevelt Elementary School. Ruth retired in 1975. She was active and belonged to the following organizations, Delta Kappa Gamma, Roosevelt Woman's Club, Tempe Beauts of ASU, and the Roosevelt Retired Teachers. Her son Brian and her sister, Madge Nash, survive her. A sunset memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 25th at 6:00 p. m., at the South Mountain Community Church, 717 East Southern Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona. Betty Baize, 74, passed away September 24, 2004. She was born January 24, 1930 in Shoals, Indiana to Carl and Edith Brown. She moved to Tempe, Az. with her husband and children in 1977. A devoted and loving wife and mother, Betty also enjoyed attending classes at Mesa Community College for many years, participated in several campus activities, was presented the Dean's award and crowned Homecoming Queen in 1980 at the age of 50. William Bradford Baker, 83, passed away on September 25, 2004. He was born on Aug. 29, 1921 in Norwood, Mass. Bill rode into Phoenix on his Harley Davidson in 1947, where he worked as a machinist till he retired. Bill served in the U. S. Marines during WW II, where he received a purple heart. Bill was a long standing member of the United Methodist Church and Men's Club. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold & Sarah Baker, his sister Sarah Baker, and daughter Norma Whitlock. Lt. Col. David T. "Rev" Baker was a true patriot who served with valor for 24 years as a United States Air Force officer, F-15 fighter pilot and flight instructor. Dave was a graduate of Cortez High School in 1975 and ASU in 1982. "Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do." He had a passion for politics, haunted houses, Santa Claus and golf and had a great sense of humor and wit. He was living in Oro Valley, Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, at the time of his death March 6, 2007 at University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. He was 49. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kathleen, daughter Vanessa; mother Beverly, brother Brian, Dr. & Mrs. Peter PUSATERI and family. A loving family man, David (Rev) adored his wife and daughter, cherished his mother, was devoted to his in-laws and was an especially doting and loving uncle. BAKER, William A.
Dr. William A. Baker, 90, who practiced dentistry in Phoenix from 1920 to 1967, died Dec. 31, 1981, in Doctors Hospital. Dr. Baker, of 207 W. Clarendon, serviced three years as chairman of the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners. He was a charter member of the Phoenix Executives Club and served as its third president. He was former dental chairman of the National Advisory Committee to the Selective Service and was a chairman of the Phoenix Civil Service Board. Dr. Baker was born in Ewing, Illinois, and came to Arizona in 1918. He graduated from St. Louis University Dental Department in 1916 and served as chief dental surgeon, at two Army base hospitals from 1917 to 1920. In later years, he took graduate courses at schools in Illinois and Colorado and in 1958, at age 67, completed a year at Baylor University post graduate school for peridontology and received a bachelor of science in dentistry. Dr. Baker was a member of the staffs of Valley hospitals, local and national professional organizations, the Methodist Church, El Zaribah Shrine, Phoenix Hiram Club, Luke-Greenway American Legion, Arizona State University Foundation, Phoenix Country Club, Arizona Club and National Council on Crime and Delinquency. Survivors include his wife, Beulah ROBBS BAKER; son, Dr. William D. BAKER; stepson, A. B. ROBBS, Jr.; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Private services at A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary. Prescott -- A 72-year old Prescott Valley man committed suicide Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1976, by hanging himself with a clothesline, Yavapai County officials said. Alfred Banick died of strangulation, Dr. Philip Keen, County Pathologist said Wednesday. Yavapai County Sheriff's Lt. Byron Langdell said Banick's body was discovered by a neighbor. Langdell said Banick attached the clothesline to a railing in his trailer home. No note was left, but Langdell said Banick had been despondent because of family problems. 1/15/1976.

BARKLEY, Lela Redden
Lela REDDEN BARKLEY was a member of one of Tempe's Pioneer Families. She was born August 5, 1902, in Long Beach, California, to Byron and Ida REDDEN, who were on vacation at the time. She, her mother, father, and two sisters lived on a ranch at McClintock and Guadalupe Roads. She received her education from the one room Kyrene School, Rural School, and Tempe Normal School, now ASU. She went on to receive a Master's Degree, with High Distinction, from ASU. Lela, a retired school teacher, taught elementary grades at 10th Street School in Tempe, and Grandview and Solano Schools, in the Osborn School District in Phoenix, where she was a role model for her students and her peers. She was a member of Arizona Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority - Fidelis Beta Chapter, Eastern Star Chapter #18 of Tempe and Central United Methodist Church. Lela REDDEN BARKLEY, aged 104, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on February 14, 2007. Husband, John J. BARKLEY, an attorney, whose practice was in the Phoenix Title and Trust Building and to whom she was married for 58 years, preceded her in death. Also her only son, John L. BARKLEY, a granddaughter, Nanci SMITH, a great-grandson, a great-great granddaughter, and two sisters. She is survived by daughter-in-law, Dorothy (Honey) BARKLEY WALLACE, grandson, Bruce BARKLEY (Sue), granddaughters, Patti DUNCAN and Kathi BROWN, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. BARR, Charles M.
Charles M. Barr, a former veteran Southern California aerospace and transportation executive, died Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at his retirement home in Peoria, Arizona, after a short illness. He was 89. Mr. Barr moved to Arizona in 2000, after a long career, which he began as a newspaperman in his native Texas, and continued after World War II as a public relations executive at the fledgling Northrop Aircraft, now Northrop-Gruman, in Southern California. He provided a public voice for Northrop, and its legendary president, John K. Northrop, in the company's early development of its then-controversial Flying Wings, forerunners of the USAF's present B-2 bomber fleet. He later served as a consultant to the Metropolitan Transit Authority in Los Angeles. Charles is survived by his wife, Gladys Carpenter Barr, of Peoria, Arizona; a son, Robert Barr of San Pedro, California; four grandchildren: Donovan, Evanna, Ian, and Diamond and four nephews: Charles, Richard and John Norton, all of Texarkana, Texas; and William Norton of Tyler, Texas.
