ALTHOFF, James Francis
James Francis Althoff, born
September 9, 1928, died Thursday, September 9, 2004. James was born and raised
in Effingham, Illinois. Jim attended St. Anthony High School. At the University
of Illinois, he earned his BS in Accounting, and was a member of Phi Eta Sigma
and Delta Sigma Phi Fraternities. Jim enjoyed a rich and interesting life. Jim
joined the Navy at seventeen, immediately after graduating from high school. He
was stationed in Asia while serving in the Navy. Among the last to leave, his
ship was under attack as it left China. Jim's business career was varied and
successful, presenting him with exciting opportunities. He recalled his favorite
position as European Controller for Libby, McNeil, and Libby. He and his family
lived in Switzerland in the mid-sixties, while Jim traveled all of Europe and
the Middle East. In 1969 Jim joined Acco World Corporation of Northbrook,
Illinois, where he served as Vice President of Finance, Corporate Secretary and
Director. In structuring a management buyout, he became a principal of the
company. In 1983, Jim was key in taking the company public. He spoke of the
thrill of standing on the balcony of the New York Stock Exchange and watching
Acco come up on the ticker for the first time. This extraordinary accomplishment
marked only the third time in history that a company had gone public directly
onto the New York Stock Exchange. Retiring from Acco in 1984, he and Marian
moved to San Diego to enjoy retirement, pursue other business ventures, and hone
his golf game. Jim was a devoted and caring husband, father, brother, uncle, and
step-father, and a loving son and grandfather. Until her death in 1990, Jim
called his mother every Monday morning regardless of where in the world his
travels had taken him. Finding a phone was sometimes a challenge, but Jim
persevered, and the phone always rang at Mom's house!Always generous with his
time and assets, Jim was a member of the University of Illinois Presidents
Council, a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and a ten year board member
of St. Vincent de Paul in San Diego, California. He was also Chairman of Buffalo
National Bank in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and a very active member of Financial
Executives. In memory of his wife Marian, he initiated a scholarship at Central
Michigan University. Jim will be fondly remembered as successful yet
unpretentious, a man of caring and integrity, a man who valued family and
friends above all else. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marian. Jim
is survived by his second wife, Louise; his son, James Todd (Lauren) and
daughter, Michon Dowling (Scott), along with his step-children: Julie Seminitis
(Matthew) and Todd Ingmire; sister Mary Baker (George), and cousin Elizabeth
